Squiggle Football scratches some crazy itch that I didn't know could be scratched. It's a chaotic mix of sports simulation, auto-battler, and card game, that you can't help but keep playing one more game of. The game's creator is no stranger to making niche games that hook you, having created the webgame NationStates, and has astoundingly knocked it out of the park yet again.

Early Access Review
Full Disclosure: I backed this game on Kickstarter.

Now to the review....As FBG have made more or less clear, don't buy this Early Access game if you're expecting a finished product that you'll be able to play and progress in from the get go. This is very much an early build, and is very much still being developed. However, what we see right now is incredibly promising and I'd recommend getting involved at this stage if you'd like to submit feedback and help this game be as fantastic as possible.

The new control mechanics for the locomotives are an intriguing and positive upgrade from what we saw with our vessels in the Unterzee. The scenery that we're currently able to see is vibrant, and the new combat and customization systems are very interesting. I'm personally a huge fan of the backstory you can build for your character as you progress.

There's issues, of course. Graphics can cut in and out, Enemy Ships frequently fail to attack you, and the world still feels rather empty, and bugs.... jesus are thee bugs. However, this is all stuff that we know will be finished up as we progress.

It's an early build, but it's a very promising build, and the full release will undoubtedly be beautiful. Maybe just a tad early for EA, but they were clear about what they were releasing right now and therefore get a Positive Review from me.

I was warned I shouldn't go somewhere. I went somewhere.

I shouldn't have gone somewhere.

I adored this game as a little kid, back when AOE II was still just Age of Kings. With the reboot of Kings, plus Conquerors, plus the new Forgotten Campaigns, it's already a treasure trove to grab given that it's now able to be played multiplayer over steam and has access to Steam's Workshop. The graphics re-skin, while not majorly noticeable, updated the game for modern computers and has made it playable. If you've got $25 to spare, grab this and its DLC for sure.
