Before games like Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human or Life Is Strange showed the world what a "choice-driven" story could do, there was The Walking Dead from Telltale. The little episodic series that taught games how to gut you with one conversation and make a single moment stick with you for years. It's not perfect, but it's honest, raw, human, and full of the kind of hard choices that actually feel heavy.

Season 1

Season 1 is the one everyone remembers. This is where Telltale hit something rare: a story that feels personal without needing combat, spectacular graphics, or filler. You meet Lee Everett and Clementine. The game uses tiny, human moments to build a bond so strong you feel it when things break. Lee and Clementine’s relationship is the spine of the whole franchise, and the way it grows, slowly, awkwardly, naturally, makes everything else hurt more. The writing pulls no punches, every choice carries weight, and even when the mechanical “branching” is smaller than you expect, the emotional payoff is huge. Episode pacing moves from quiet to brutal, and the final episode still hits like an uppercut straight to your jaw. If you want to know why people point to Telltale as a turning point for narrative games, start here.

Season 2

Season 2 switches the focus to Clementine and doubles down on the grimy survival tone. It’s a little messier than Season 1, but in a way that suits the world. Instead of protecting a child, you are the child forced to act like an adult. Clementine’s growth is the point: she’s not a cute sidekick, she’s a survivor. The writing is harsher. The choices feel more punishing. The tone is bleaker, but playing as Clementine is powerful. The game makes you live with the consequences of your actions in ways that feel personal. A lot of people don't like this one as much as I do, but I think we can all agree that the atmosphere and the emotional tension are solid even if the season didn’t always stick the landing.

Season 3

This season tried to freshen things up. A new protagonist (Javier), a more modern engine look, and an attempt to balance old favorites and new faces. Not my favorite season, but still a very strong one. The game shines when it focuses on family and small choices, but it sometimes feels like it’s trying to do too much. Still, Clementine returns in a meaningful role, and there are several moments that genuinely land. If you loved the world, it’s worth the ride.

Season 4

This season aimed to give Clementine a proper send-off, and it most definitely succeeds. The final season tightens the focus: smaller environments, stronger character beats, and an ending that feels earned. For me, this season provides the closure the saga deserved. And in my opinion, it is also the best season right after the first one.

Summary:

I cried at the end of each season. I yelled at characters. I made choices I regret and ones I’m proud of. And that’s exactly the point: Telltale gave me characters whose small, human moments mattered more than explosions or graphics. The Walking Dead series might be a little flawed, but it’s one of the few game sagas that can still make me ache days later. Play it for Lee and Clementine. Play it for the hard choices. Play it because it made the rest of the industry take story games seriously.
