First time playing an extraction shooter. This game is special. The client is polished, the visuals look good, the sound design is realistic and crispy, and the performance is great (on 3080). On top of all that, the way the Arcs (AI enemies) move and behave feels so realistic that it makes the gameplay so immersive.

The client has ultrawide support. Already better than some AAA games. The client also in general very polished and optimized while still looking great. The combat is simple but engaging enough. The jobs are fun to level up!

Just under 4 hours in and this is already one of my most favorite game after Elden Ring and Lies of P. This is I think what we hoped modern Final Fantasy games would be.

Edit: Just completed the game. Around 40 hours for the main story, 70+ hours for all achievements, Expert difficulty.

This game is a masterpiece.

The visuals are fantastic. The art style has this beautiful painterly look which is very fitting of course and the cutscenes are very cinematic with this post processing they added: low frame rate, shallow DOF, camera and object motion blur, diffusion filter, etc. to achieve this "shot with a camera" film look. And whoever thought of that world map, genius. It's like the the old way JRPGs do world map traversals. That tilt-shift look to make the world look miniature is perfect way to modernize this old concept.

The exploration can feel confusing at times due to the lack of a minimap and some areas lacking distinct landmarks to orient yourself to, but in general, is great and is very rewarding from the rewards you get for discovering these secret areas/bosses.

The combat is great as well. The parry counter attack in particular is super satisfying to pull off when the music goes away for a bit then the animation and the sound effects plays. The system itself is like a combined and improved version of traditional turn based RPGs like Legend of Dragoon and some more recent games like Yakuza 7/8 and Persona, and which ever game first had the AP system. There's tons of freedom for different strategies and build variety with weapon passives, and the equipment passives. Lot's of horizontal progression to look forward to while playing to mix and match different passives. Also, bosses are not immune to status effects! I don't understand why other developers design all these different status effects in their combat which can be a very good strategy to build around to, then makes all bosses immune to them. What a waste of effort, making some characters/strategies who utilize status effects pointless. Also, borrowing the items system used in souls-likes is genius. It streamlined the usually bloated item system in traditional RPGs where there's hundreds of items/loot you collect that you barely use to just a few items that are important and meaningful.

The music. Amazing! Especially that boss fight theme in the "manor".

And of course the story. Not gonna say anything other than this is my favorite story told in a video game. I hope the film adaptation is done as well as in the game.

33 out of 10 would play again.

Improved combat from 7. Story is still good. The characters are still great, even the new ones. If you haven't played previous Yakuza games with Kiryu, there will be stretches in the story that you will not get/care about. Still a great game as long as you've played 7!
