I *love* Firewatch, so much I bought it on PC and PS4.

I bought it on Steam last year in the Summer Sales, and of the 10 or so games I bought in that sale it was the one I was most eager to play.

I knew very little about it going in beyond the name and that it was a narrative based game (my jam), and I think this really enhanced the experience. I won't go into plot details here because I don't want to ruin it for anyone else but if you're into mystery, solid narrative, amazing characters and interaction between the characters then you're going to love Firewatch.

Speaking of the characters, the voice acting in Firewatch is incredible. The characters feel so real, and it made it so easy to become totally immersed in the game. When I first played it through I actually didn't think I'd play it again, because I knew everything that happened. I've lost count now but I'd guess I've played it 5 or 6 times now if not more. I've seen it criticized for your "choices" not really having an effect on the plot but I think those people are kind of missing the point.

Again without too much detail, the "mystery" in Firewatch (at least in my opinion) is there to serve as the story and to give you something to do. The actual choices in the game that do have consequences are the dialogue choices. I've played through many different ways now, the way I wanted to play it, then picking all the worst possible dialogue choices I could, then picking as little options as I could, and it felt like a whole new story/experience each time. That's incredible.

My other favourite thing about Firewatch is the compass/map system, especially the option to turn off your location on the map. It's a very specific thing to love but I was a scout growing up and did a lot of hiking/orienteering, and Firewatch perfectly captures that experience.

Lastly, I think it's fantastic that the developers have chosen to take a stand against the racism that occurs way to often in the gaming community. I enjoy playing a game that much more knowing that the people who made it share the same values and commitment to making the community and industry a more conscientious place as I do.
