Cubic Odyssey – Disappointingly Underdeveloped for a Full Release

Cubic Odyssey presents an interesting and visually appealing concept — a blend of Minecraft with elements of Empyrion and No Man’s Sky. The mining system using a bot is genuinely well done and enjoyable, and the overall idea behind the game is quite promising.

However, the execution leaves a lot to be desired, especially for what is being marketed as a full release.

The crafting system lacks any meaningful depth. For a game of this scope, this is particularly underwhelming and feels unfinished. Players expecting a robust crafting experience will be sorely disappointed.

Flight controls are simply dreadful. There is no support for proper pitch, roll, or yaw via keyboard, which makes manoeuvring your ship an exercise in frustration. Landing the ship on the ground is not possible at all. Compared to titles like Empyrion — which boasts excellent flight physics and mechanics — Cubic Odyssey feels like a poor imitation.

The damage model for equipment upon death is far too punishing, with a staggering 25% loss per death. This not only discourages experimentation but also feels like an artificial way to increase difficulty and grind.

Furthermore, equipment mods are not properly displayed. There’s no clear indication of what has been modified or how it affects your stats. In fact, there is no proper stat overview at all — only vague level indicators for different areas. This makes it impossible to track or feel any sense of measurable character progression.

In several places, the game feels clunky and unpolished, adding to the overall sense of frustration.

Conclusion:
As it currently stands, Cubic Odyssey feels much more like an Early Access title than a finished product. While the core idea has potential, there is still a significant amount of work needed — particularly in refining the flight mechanics, improving crafting depth, and providing proper UI feedback for equipment and stats. Sadly, I cannot recommend the game in its current state. It’s particularly disappointing that this isn’t clearly labelled as an Early Access release. One is left with the unfortunate impression of having wasted money.
