Early Access Review
Now, this review is not from someone who has a server farm in their house and plays games at 240hz or whatever some previous reviewer (who played 0.1 hours, mind you) bragged about being able to see in.

I enjoy this game. It's not perfect, not even close, a helicopter can land in the middle of a full canopy jungle, and the AI now can shoot from where only god can see, but to me, that's fun. I laugh when the full squad of men I took with me to capture a point get obliterated because I don't know how to use the B-52 support call, I cry when the dog that had followed me to the ends of the earth gets sent to the moon by a land mine I'd set 1 tour ago. This game is not even close to making it out of early access, and I'm ok with that. It's the silly Unity engine being Unity, and the fact I can directly tell the Huey pilot where to go, while 20 beers and a shot of morphine in, just because I've somehow survived a tour and haven't been mortally wounded, and he insists that "there's too much fire", makes this a game that not only I can continue playing, but actually anticipate the full fruition of it's completion, makes all the silly incidents that destroy perfectly executed attacks tolerable.

It's the Vietnam War for god sakes, sorry this isn't your dad's "we know the enemy" wars. It's supposed to be chaotic and test every fiber of your being to NOT light up the village you just encountered because leading up to it was nothing but ambushes (even if war crimes are a stat, and it's only a war crime if you lose, so don't lose)

I'm just gonna type this out while waiting for the campaign map to unfreeze.

I am legitimately upset with how this game released. Relic, the studio that brought us the glorious CoH original, has fallen to whatever the hell this is. Yes, I shilled out for the $79.99 version. Yes, I had incredible hopes going into this game.

But what we got is... ♥♥♥♥, honestly. AT crews halfway out the back of a truck carrying a Flak 36, audio disappearing and reappearing when there's too much going on, as others have noted, incorrect shots being noted on tanks and vehicles, graphics that look like that toy soldiers game (I get it's the Mediterranean and thus ooo sun is bright), but it looks like a damn cartoon. At least the multiplayer is somewhat fun, even if the AI is more confused than a kid being sent to the store to buy "that blue package".

The Italian Campaign is disaster. Simply put. Heck, the game froze to the point I had to ctl atl dtl out to do anything. At least the skirmishes are fun, I guess. Haven't tried the North Africa one yet but I'm not holding my breath it'll be any better.

Point is, in it's current state, this game is not something I'd buy. Hopefully, with patches, it'll get better, but right now it has the feel of a game made by freshman developers for a project, while one of them was on the floor passed out, and the others just drank an entire bottle of fireball on a bet. If it improves, I'll come change my review, but it's not a good game right now.

(10 hour edit)

The game still isn't the best, but, it's playable. Having gotten a few towns into the Italian Campaign, it has picked up a bit, and the AI does seem to be more aggressive, since every single of my battlegroups has been constantly attacked each turn. For the most part, the skirmishes/battles are fast, just rush the points and wait to see if the AI does anything or not (It's about 60/40). Have not tried the North Africa campaign still.

Multiplayer is still so far the outstanding part of this game, even with the incredible imbalance of units, and the British being... Bad, to put it lightly.

Honestly, it's nice. Granted, the story is up there with AC6 in it's sappiness and outlandish "gotta save our way of life, in this case our air force", BUT, it's good. It's a very well designed game, especially for one being ported over to the PC that wasn't the disaster that was Assault Horizon. The graphics are top notch, the aircraft selection is top notch, the flight dynamics are the standard ace combat pulling incredible G's that while Trigger can take it, your co-pilot passes out and now you have to do everything until he wakes up. And let's not forget the fan service, something only the Ace Combat series can pull and get praised for instead of "ugh, appealing to the die hards." And I'm sure this is supposed to be reviewed on the DLC page itself, but I'll put a small note for it.

The DLC was fantastic. I got it for free pre-purchasing it, and it fit right into the AC world.

As a veteran of the original Company of Heroes, this one (as many have stated previously) is not really comparable to it in any sense. It really lost the dark/grimy magic that the original had, which it seems was a side effect of Sega taking over Relic Entertainment, who by themselves were able to make almost the de facto WWII RTS for a good while.

Yes, this game has numerous faults, from the Russian conscript rush to the Panzergrenadier panzerschreck late game domination, as well as graphical hiccups and a campagin that could have been slightly better made than what it was (like how the Battle of Kursk was just skipped). But at the same time, it's entertaining, and really just at the end of the day is a fun time waster. OKW, USF, and the British Forces (minus the base based 25 pounders) helped the game somewhat in diversity, but it still falls short compared to it's origins.

I'd still recommend it, though. Because getting to see an AI officer kill off my own troops who are trying to get healed and reinforce is both enjoyable and mind numbing.
