I can't recommend this game.

Tutorial Island had only a few noticeable performance problems. However, the first big area took a HUGE performance dump. Something is missing with the story; nothing is pulling me into what's happening with these characters as the first game did. The environments seem sterile, empty, and uninspired. The character creator really did not improve from the first game. I'm disappointed.

I'm going to park this game for a while and hope for some big updates from Bandai Namco.

I'll update my review should the above change.

Introduction:

I'm writing this review after completing Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game with 100% completion. This game is bringing me into the genre. I've tried SnowRunner in the past and it didn't grab me. After completing this game I have a better understanding of what the genre has to offer.

Game-play Mechanics:

Expeditons offers a distinct departure from SnowRunner, focusing more on scout-based exploration and forging your path through the terrain. Unlike the heavy hauls and trailers of its predecessor, here you uncover the map as you explore, aided by binoculars and later radar unlocks. New trucks and upgrades are gradually acquired through exploration and mission completion, steadily enhancing your vehicle roster. While trailers are absent, missions entail recovering and towing unlockable vehicles to designated locations.

Key Features:

The game introduces innovative tools like jack-screws for vehicle flips and portable anchors for creating anchor points in barren landscapes. Each terrain is divided into maps, with a tutorial map and subsequent regions like Arizona and the Carpathians, each comprising multiple expansive landscapes. Update 3 has introduced free roam functionality after completing the first Expedition on each map. Additionally, players can recruit team members, offering bonuses and enabling specialized missions.

Pros:

Unique game-play mechanics emphasize exploration and improvisation.
Incremental vehicle upgrades and new truck discoveries add depth to progression.
Diverse maps provide varied terrain and challenges.
Introduction of free roam post-Update 3 enhances replay-ability.
Team member system enriches strategy and mission diversity.

Cons:

Mission clarity can be lacking, particularly regarding outpost objectives and map transitions.
Occasional physics bugs may result in unexpected vehicle flips.
Mission mini-games are lacking depth or clarity.

Conclusion:

Expeditions: A Mudrunner stands as a fantastic addition to the genre, marred only by minor issues that could be addressed in future updates. The promise of additional content and the potential for co-op game-play make it a worthwhile investment, particularly when on sale. I highly recommend it to fans of exploration and strategy alike.
