HEADS UP: If you don't like extraction shooters, like me, this won't really change your mind, and despite my time enjoying this game (sometimes), it didn't change my mind either. This is probably the last online/PvP extraction shooter I'll get.

Now, off the bat; I haven't played destiny 2 in many many years, so the crap that people hate bungie for doing isn't really affecting my review on this front.

My notes:
~The vibe/theme is incredible
~Sound design is incredible
~Atmosphere is incredible
~Lore is incredible
~Gunplay itself is incredible
~Turnaround time to get back into the action is really good (my second biggest concern about extraction shooters)
~The feeling of "I can't believe I lost all my stuff, and I am really mad rn" is actually not huge (which was my biggest concern)
~I hate when games implement "seasons." It's the biggest reason I didn't get BF6, and I even miss the BF series. I don't know what the seasons will be like here, but I guarantee I won't care.

But all in all; the GAME itself is decent. Even good in many aspects. The biggest issues for me come from the things from the community and what's inherent to the extraction shooter genre itself.

~The "Friendly" communication is useless, because the turnaround time is so short, and the loot so plentiful; people don't respond, they just shoot. End of story.
~Going out as Rook = almost no action unless it's PvE, because any team is just going to kill you (see point above)
~Going out as any normal shell as solo is essentially the same as Rook.
~If you're out in a matchmade team, and no one is communicating, you're probably gonna have a bad time. To be successful, you godda be coordinated. A lot of folks just go off and do their own thing and don't say a word.
~Because I have no friends, I can only matchmake, and only sometimes I'll get a group with mics. And even though you won't always win a firefight or extract, it still tends to be more fun than going solo or playing with mutes.

While writing this review, I think I inadvertently narrowed down why I don't dig extraction shooters all that much; It's the sense of power and progress. At any point, you can get killed and lose everything (though getting it BACK isn't a massive deal, money isn't scarce and neither is loot, but customizing your stuff to where you want it time after time kinda bogs down the experience sometimes, thought getting back more expensive or rarer loot makes it a bigger deal, and can get frustrating). And that gets boring.

tl;dr

Game itself is good, but if you don't like extraction shooters, it won't change your mind.

I'm desperately hoping this doesn't become abandonware... This has such a good vibe, I love everything about it so far. The groundwork is solid. Just keep going. Also it doesn't look like they're forgetting about solo players, so far. I mean, I am so hesitant when I see "1-4 player coop" in the description of a game, it's almost enough to make me skip it, because they're usually just one off games like repo or lethal company, where it's only fun with other folks, and you can't really enjoy it solo, especially down the line when no one else wants to play, and you feel like playing yourself. Here, I've been having a blast by myself, and am actually into the story, so much so that I will continue playing by myself. Unless of course, they trash this game. Hopefully not.

but good work, and keep it up. best 20 bucks I've spent in a long while.

This is the formula. This is the loop. The vibe, the look, the gameplay. It's a gem. Please, I'm begging you, don't turn this into abandonware. I want to keep playing this. I want more stuff. I want more fumes. One critique tho; controller needs a little aim assist, because christ, it's tough to hit stuff with the controller. This is the only driving game where I prefer a K/M setup than a controller one because of that.

That being said, big kudos on having a demo. It solidified a purchase from me. Keep up the good work.

This is a gem. This has THE formula... It's short, sweet, with excellent replayability. But, the formula... the gameplay loop is neuron activation incarnate.

This is not "just a card game." Yes, it's solid and it's fun, but... If you like creepy stuff as much as I do, this is for you. If you've played any other Daniel Mullins Games, you know what the deal is. I wish I was talented and cool...

I don't not recommend this game, but it left me feeling a little bit disappointed.

Well, it's a good game in general, and it's my favorite type of horror, psychological horror... Or thriller even. Hell, What I like best is when something is creepy and gives me the goosebumps. Which sometimes this game does.

I love the concept and almost everything about it... Just the payoff at the end was just okay. I beat it 100%, and I will probably never play it again.

Honestly, the worst part about it, is the mood breaks a lot and for too long of a time.

Yeah, it's exactly what you think... But it's pretty much done, it's not some dummy early access type deal. It's fun, cute, and entertaining, though the ONE singular gun sound and the ONE singular execution (for each weapon) kinda gives me a headache.

EDIT: 10 months after my initial review; it remains the same. I, apparently, still suck. Or the game is still too darn hard. I dunno. But I will re-iterate that I want to see a movie in this artstyle.

It kills me to leave a review like this... I want to LOVE this game, but I'm so frustrated that I don't even want to play anymore.

This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen, every time a cutscene plays, it's like watching a moving painting. It's exquisite. The gameplay, well... the core, the fighting feels super smooth and weighty. And when you get a kill, it's extremely satisfying. Unfortunately, that's kind of rare. This is also one of the most difficult games I have ever played in my life. I don't know how high the leveling system goes, but I'm only like level 14, and I want to cry... It's so difficult. I don't think I even got far in the story... Like at all. Yes, of course, git gud and all that, but I've been playing games my entire life and this is insanely difficult.

Parrying only works if you're within a Planck time of the enemy move hitting you. The i-frames in the dodge seem to... activate at like random times of the roll. The telegraphing of enemy moves are good, but not in their timing.... ie; they'll reach back, wait an un-intuitively long or short time-frame and use their move with varying speed, so I can hardly ever tell when it'll hit. The game punishes you so hard too, harder than even Outward, and that game is hard too.

I won't go into details because it's mentioned in a thousand different reviews already, but some of the gameplay/design choices are some of the stupidest things and some of the coolest things I've ever seen.

This game is like dealing with a bi-polar schizophrenic. And I know because I was married to one.

This needs a LOT of work. But, I can't lie; I've enjoyed playing it thus far. Quite a bit, even.

Good luck french bois
