Unpacking is a relaxing puzzle game where you unpack boxes throughout different stages of your life. The mode of storytelling is unique and engaging, while remaining truthful and relatable. The story is told through objects, sound, and surroundings- we never see the character we play as, nor do we see anyone else in their life, for that matter. What we do see are the impacts of time, surroundings, and people as we evolve. In this way, Unpacking is one of the most human games I have played. Additionally, there is more than one way to play: if you prefer placing each item where it belongs with the game's limitations, the puzzle aspect comes into play a bit more strongly. If you prefer to place each item wherever you want without the game's limitations, then just make that adjustment in the settings. As of now, I have completed the game twice, earned every achievement, and am halfway through a third run- and my honest opinion is that it's incredibly apparent that a great deal of thought and care was put into this game; from visual design to storytelling, to sound design, to level design. I would recommend Unpacking to anyone.

Some people who have reviewed this game have expressed that the elements of gender and sexuality portrayed in Unpacking lacked relatability to them. To this, I would say that the point of the game is to find a place for your belongings and experience the familiarity of establishing and re-establishing yourself throughout different stages of life, and the player doesn't need the gender or sexuality of the character to reflect their own in order for the point of the game to hit home. That said, I wouldn't judge someone who feels that this aspect makes it difficult for them to enjoy Unpacking- my only hope is that reading those reviews wouldn't necessarily deter anyone else from taking a chance on this game.
