Mate I was trying so hard to enjoy this game. I think it has some really impressive features, like first and foremost, the interconnected level design. Plus some interesting new mechanics, such as, umbral seedlings. Being able to create your own bonfires/checkpoints always fascinated me ever since I heard it had been an idea early in Dark Souls 3's development, before ultimately being discarded.

I'm not going to repeat the obvious and correct criticism about the blatant lack of enemy variety and horrendous enemy placement. This essentially forces you to speedrun most if not all areas in hope of coming across boss arenas or vestiges. Nor the initially jarring the floatiness of movement and combat. To be perfectly honest, I found imaging the game as a higher definition version of Dark Souls 2 reduced my expectations and frustration, whilst increasing my enjoyment of it. Which probably speaks for itself about LOTF2.

The final straw and the reason I'm even writing this review instead of continuing my playthrough is because my save file just became corrupted. I exited the game at about 7:39pm - returned at 8:26pm following the 15th update of the day, to discover my save file corrupted and seemingly unrecoverable. It's 2023 how is that even still a thing? remember when you had to blow on your Gameboy advanced cartridges if you accidentally moved them 1 degree off alignment when playing Pokemon Emerald? Honestly the fact that you can lose your entire progress nearly a month after release for a game they're retailing at £49.99 is mental. I can put up with ♥♥♥♥ performance, or the previously mentioned poor game design choices, but this ♥♥♥♥ is inexcusable. It also ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me off that they include this "If ever you experience this issue yourself, and of course we hope you don’t, please immediately send us your corrupted save to support@cigames.com so we can identify the potential origin of the issue. Your saves have truly helped us reduce this issue already" in the most recent patch note. It's already enough of a ballache trying to remedy the issue yourself by studying the 20 confusing videos of Indian men with max gain Blue Yeti mics explaining how to recover your save file by exporting LogMeIn Hamachi to your appdata folder. But this official link posted by the developer to address the issue, just directs you to their commercial website in Polish and from what I can tell has no resource to upload your corrupted save file to help you recover it or contribute to fixing it. It only has links to careers, investor relations, press and influencers, and their previous games; with such classics as "Lords of the Fallen 2014". Get ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Imagine you could have the best gourmet A1 5 star Michelin meal of your life that would literally make you shoot rope for days, but there's a 0.01% chance your knob would fall off and you'd get deported to Brazil. It would probably undermine the previous culinary experience wouldn't it?

Used to love this game for the 900 hours I've played it. I don't feel as though any other game has first person melee combat nearly as fun, fair, and engaging as Mordhau. The most recent patch is borderline game breaking in some people's cases.

1) Optimisation and server connection has gone out the window. I used to run my game on ultra setting and get around 130fps average. After patch day I was getting about 70fps inconsistently with custom settings. A nice player PATCHIE helped me a lot by recommending something as simple and stupid as typing "-dx12" into the steam launch options and it reclaimed about 50fps... I've never seen so many people consistently rubber banding in matches before.

2) Combat and sound changes. This seems to come down to personal preference, but Imop, combat feels much worse after patch. I have played during multiple adjustments to combat, although they took some initial getting used to, I've subsequently thought they were all improvements. I've got used to the new one now, and I still find it janky af. I swear parry windows and collision is just off now I find it quite hard to describe the changes to overall gamefeel (I appreciate that doesn't help much) but it is just worse. It is very annoying getting used to the feedback of the game to play it at a semi decent capacity, only for the devs to change that in the most arbitrary ways every year or so.

3) Map tweaks. You can climb on the roofs in feitoria. now you can't. no wait you can, no now this patch you can't. First game crossroads invasion (a perfectly designed and executed map) met a new bug/glitch? idek I dont think the guy was hacking - The King was invincible so it was just a 20minute wait until they inevitably won... because we couldn't damage the commander... The only drastic changes they have made to map designed appears to be Mountain Pass invasion. Aside from see through rocks with broken textures/collision models, they have made the 2nd to last stage much wider with significantly less bottlenecking. So why haven't they adjusted Castello??? like at all?? the bottlenecks on that map are insane. These maps have been out for over a year now - Why have they been balanced and tweaked so little. When Feitoria was released it went through several revisions in design and layout closely following the rollout of the map.

4) I'm not even going to say I preferred the old lute sound, but it was significantly more bearable than the new one. Prior to the most recent patch, there is a massive problem with "bards" using scripts/macros to create the most ungodly racket possible in an attempt to frustrate you beyond belief. It is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ effective. There are no means to reduce the volume of these players other than completely reducing your game sound which is completely redundant given you are TRYING TO HEAR THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE. What started off as a fun feature for players to port in midi files and play little songs on the battlefield, is now just a tool that is constantly used to torture anyone actually trying to play your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. And this patch the devs have made their lives even easier by changing the classic lute sound, into some stupidly loud bass/steel drum monstrosity. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it would appear the devs added a voice volume slider, so you can CHOOSE to have the option to stop other players annoying you by spamming voice commands. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ADD A LUTE VOLUME SLIDER.

I don't know if it's just because I'm in a bad spot at the minute and everything seems worse than it is. I feel this patch has objectively made the game worse in every aspect, other than one feature that is good. Your weapon stays in alt mode when you respawn... Prior to this patch I'd recommend the game to anyone, I love it, however I've had to stop playing myself now because it is genuinely not enjoyable to play for the combat, or even to just have a laugh anymore, unless your idea of having a laugh is to have about 3 players with lutes destroy your eardrums with ear rape macros for 25 minutes each game.

The writing is absolutely atrocious and is offensive if you're a long time fan of the series. **SPOILERS** You get an impression that things are starting to go downhill when the story is interrupted by Lilith having her siren powers drained. There are numerous times in the most crucial moments in the plot, that they seeming forgot what to do with the player during these cut scenes. You are forced as a captive audience, despite being a vault hunter and the most powerful character in the game, to watch as probably the most established and arguably powerful characters in the franchise, Lilith, has her contribution to the story drained from her because the writers demanded so.

Then Maia and Ava are introduced. Ava, a character who before even finishing her first sentence - Will annoy you. She is immediately established as a rebellious teen when Maia asked Ava to guard a library which she instantly defies and leaves her post. They then centre the next God knows how many story missions on her. Forcing you to interact with this unlikable Lisa Simpson of a character.

Then you get to the first vault. Having recentlyjust learnt of the Calpyso's siren succ powers (I can't remember their names specifically because they are disappointingly forgettable as antagonists) Lilith wants to go with you to the vault in order to protect Maia (The only remaining siren with powers). Maia immediately contradicts this and goes with you instead to aid you with her powers. She asks Ava to stay on the ship due to the obvious dangers. before you even enter the vault, the Calpyso twins speak to you and essentially call you an idiot for thinking that they wouldn't get to the vault first. It is established that they are already at the vault. This is then forgotten for the next hour or so, because you proceed to clear the entire vault and kill the guardian without acknowledging them at all. Then there is another forced cut-scene. But you aren't even stuck behind a door this time - You are just invisible in the cut scene. Having already done the work for them, The Calpyso twins come out and succ the guardians powers. Ava, as expected, appears from literally no where, having run away from sanctuary and is immediately held captive by 1 of the twins. Maia grabs the other twin for bargaining power, who suddenly reveals he also has the succ power - however his disintegrates Maia, who does nothing to escape, fight or change her current predicament.

I'm glad the same writers are finding more work after demolishing the final season of Game of Thrones.
TL-DR:
- The vault hunter is useless in this game. The main changes in the story happen during these terrible cutscenes because NPCs make completely idiotic decisions. Not because of your choices or actions.
- You are forced to placate am incredibly unlikeable, brat of a character, who is the focal point of far too many main/story missions (much like Lisa Simpson in the later seasons of the Simpsons) who **SPOILERS** is eventually given command of the Crimson Raiders - because ♥♥♥♥ it, Reasons.
- The writers forget what they have established hours ago, and the lobotomized main characters repeat the same mistake and die because of it.

Despite the monotony of the area, the most interesting mission so far, has been the Handsome Casino DLC. It's funny how even a copy (he's a body double so slightly different personality) of a well written, likeable villain from the first game, completely outshines any character from Borderlands 3. It is a shame as the game runs, looks, and plays nicely, however unfortunately, the writing hasn't been given nearly as much care and attention as it deserves, and in a franchise with historically interesting characters and stories - The absence of any of that is very apparent. The game really feels soulless without any substance in the characters, story or writing. You feel as though you're just endlessly going from point A to point B and repeat - mindlessly completing monotonous tasks with no reward in the hopes you get a legendary drop on the way.
