what if they made an extraction shooter that was good?
great game! art direction is sick, gameplay is satisfying, sound design is amazing. keeps me coming back for more every week, and i've been able to convince some friends who otherwise hate extraction shooters to have a good time. truly a masterclass of the genre. and despite the fact that there is an in game store (which is fine, devs can only deliver so much content off of the base price of the game), the amount of free premium currency you can get through events and decks is absurd. not to mention all the decks and events have been free, no paying to unlock the battlepass here. truly crazy how good the devs have been to the players.

also on the topic of AI use, technically embark are doing it "right" by paying for the likenesses of voice actors- but the AI voices just sound like absolute ♥♥♥♥. for ingame player callouts its entirely inoffensive, but the NPCs in the hub sound like absolute garbage. i would advise you to turn off voices in sound settings but that disables the in game player voices which are useful :(

its crazy how this game is still so good
played on release day, had my fill
came back recently- its still so fun!
dont trust ppl who act like the game is terrible because it makes them mad- the main mode of gameplay is a casual experience (dominion). there's a lot of silly stupid mechanics that you'll see, but its all in good fun. its truly hard to get mad at the game if you just approach it like a casual fighting game and try to find answers to what your opponent is doing.
all in all it's great to see a game with a 2017 monetization model in 2025. there's a battle pass, but its absolutely not required, and each hero has enough depth to warrant playing them for tens if not hundreds of hours. and there's like 37 of them! and just levelling your character continues to be entertaining as you get access to new cosmetics that you get FOR FREE! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it a rarity to unlock content by playing the game and being rewarded for the time you put in, in a multiplayer game in this day and age.
not to mention the solid story mode, fun coop modes, you can do all your quests playing against bots if you dont feel like locking in (the bots get really good at a certain point!).
just an overall great package.
AND THE DEV SUPPORT??
i mean there may only be a relatively small team working on updates but we are on year NINE of updates and we're still getting new balance changes, cosmetics of all kinds, new heroes. i am thoroughly impressed that this game is still getting updates, but i'm happy it does. great game.

i really want to like this game but it makes me ill to play it
the art direction is great, gameplay foundations are solid, and overall i'm interested
but the forced on motion blur, the horrific mouse acceleration and seemingly a sensitivity option that does nothing(?) lead to an experience that's sickening. i can put up with the bad performance (i ran everything on low, barely got 60fps on a 2070s, frame generation somehow made it look worse). i can put up with the cheesy quirky dialogue. but when it is actively this painful to play the game it's hard to recommend. i want to like it, i really do, but by the end of the demo i was glad it was over.

really good game once you get past the optimization
and the menus
and the insane online lobby systems
and the keybinds
i swear its good lol
i could see not recommending just based on performance alone but i got it running well enough on a 2070 to play that i kept playing for 20 hours so id be a bit disingenuous to do that.
it is kinda crazy how much bs you have to do to get the game into a playable state, but once you do its very very good. if you can deal with that annoying setup phase its worth.

like overwatch if it was fun (for the record i like overwatch)
and by that i mean its fresh. im impressed by how well the melee heroes work, as i was always kinda sad overwatch strayed away from true melee heroes. the art is amazing, and at least they're giving you a little bit of rewards as a free to play player as compared to overwatch where there are really no progression systems to keep your attention aside from ranked. every character feels considerably different from another. team ups are very fun! and the quality of life features, the extra sauce that games tend to take years to add (replay systems, in game tournaments, various progression systems) are alll there and they just work. it's surprising to see a product of this quality on a game's initial release.

i can only recommend this if you're deeply familiar with platform fighters
and even to those players, its a very, VERY begrudging recommend.

if you are new to the genre, im not saying you shouldnt try, but this is absolutely the WORST new player experience i've ever seen in a fighting game. the training mode is solid, but a complete lack of tutorials is baffling considering rivals 1's amazing tutorials. and yeah, i'm sure they'll add it eventually, but the product as it is now is really only for the hardcore player.

which, in some respects, is fun. i'm having a good time, and i will continue playing, it just seems like a missed opportunity. like, why was this game not released in early access? calling it a full release seems pretty silly, as yes, the game is perfectly playable, but very hollow in every aspect except moment to moment gameplay.

and as much as i get having no character dlc is a good thing, instead we have $10-15 skins? if we're gonna nickle and dime players this much just make the game free to play. "but you can earn currency to buy skins!" grinding for 10+ hours for a palette swap or like, 30+ for a very basic texture change is not satisfying.

at the end of the day i want the game to do better, and i'm sure it will get better over time. again, if you're a diehard platfighter enjoyer, this game is great- if all you do is grind matches and you're fine with that. i really cant bring myself to mark the review as negative as i'm going to keep playing, but i'm very close. a very begrudging recommendation.
