A phenomenal example of a genetic simulation game! The focus of the game is on producing novel budgie phenotypes, rather than the management of a budgie colony. If you're looking to spend several hours hunting down genes and making the prettiest birds you can imagine, this is for you.

Good: The learning curve is gentle (if you know the basics of inherited genetics), and the game is simple. There are 28 "achievements" for finding specific gene combos, and after obtaining these morphs you're given more spaces to store birds. The GUI is simple and effective, there is an in-game list of all possible traits (with what effects they have on color / information about inheritance), and the models are extremely cute. This is a sandbox for those who don't have the time or space to keep a flock in real life-- perfect for younger geneticists to experiment with intentional pairings.

Neutral: The focus is purely color genetics. While there is an in-game penalty for inbreeding (cleverly formatted as a penalty to the number of breedings an inbred individual can perform), there is little else in flock management. I would love a "survival mode" where there are outside factors to consider (predation, illness, environmental risks like storms), but that's not a flaw in the game, just my personal desire for even more challenge.

Bad: Very little. I've noticed a single QoL bug (the flock menu's locked icons float above the unlocked icons, making it tricky to switch between flocks in the early game). There is a slog element to finding rare genes, but that's to be expected in any game in this genre-- the option for a "cheat mode" where you can generate individual birds with specific traits might go over well for the less patient.

Overall, Budgie Genetics Simulator is very much worth the $7 it costs. I would put it in the top 3 genetic sims I've played. Try it out!

i got this game a little more than a year ago at the reccomendation of a friend. since, ive watched it go from a good game with a neat premise to a good game with perhaps a bit much dlc, an okay game with some pretty big bugs, a medicore game with a bunch of flaws, to a downright bad game with little regard for the community behind it.

maybe a year ago i wouldve recommended it. but today, after every possible load of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ has been trasmitted to me via this game, i can honestly say its not worth it.

its a shame, overkill. a shame.

the best goat simulation i have ever experienced. this will get me ready for goat school, which is for goats.
