Fun roguelike. Hard as balls, but quick games make up for it.

This is an excellent and very well polished game. The pinnacle of metroidvania game design.

This is a very well polished game. Controlling Hornet feels amazing, exploring the well designed maps is great.

Team Cherry spent a lot of time polishing and improving the game. But it is clear to me that they kept adding stuff, without thinking if that is what the game needs. WoW-style quests for example, did the game need a quest system? "Go out and get 15 cloth from enemies in this area", drops 50% of the time. This is just pointless filler.

Most bosses are great, difficult but fair (Last Judge), some bosses are extremely unfair (Vengeful Beastfly). One mistake can easily spiral into losing all your hp. Some of the corpse runs are long and hard, meaning that each attempt is gated behind a 5 minute slog back. The shell (ammo) system is quite unfun as well. If I'm fighting a challenging boss, I don't want to have to stop doing that just to grind shells for an hour.

The exploration feels quite off as well. They have added so much stuff, that most exploration doesn't lead to Hornet getting stronger. What I want to find is mask or nail upgrades, so that it feels like my character is progressing. But all I find is random items, or tools that I wont use because of the ammo requirement.

Beneath all of this, there is a great and polished game. But it's hidden by piles and piles of pointless stuff. After the initial patches in the post-release period, the game difficulty has become a lot better tuned.

I only recommend this game to veteran Hollow Knight players.
