41 Hours played
Experience
I am an avid player of UNO, which makes me sound like a total oddball. Hear me out though.
I've been playing UNO irl almost religiously for the past 5 years of my life. Mainly during lunch at school or at parties with friends and family. Yet not once have I come to pass up on an opportunity to play because it has never gotten old for me. So, you could imagine my excitement when I found out that there was a video game on not only PC, but on Xbox One and PS4. It was like my two favorite things had a love child. And as soon as I had the money, I not only bought myself the game but also for many of my friends. Depending on what kind of rules we set in place, each round would last between 5 minutes and 2 hours. And that's not an exaggeration. This game always keeps you on your toes and plotting out how to completely screw over your friends or the enemy team in order to come out on top. I've only been playing this version of UNO for about 20 hours so far, but it feels almost like the real thing.

But that "almost" is going to be the reason for the rating I give this game.

What rubbed me the wrong way
Now, I'll be frank; this game is seriously lacking in what I would call an UNO game. Everything that I've said in the Experience section is honest and true. However, as the UNO fanatic I am, I can't help but be disappointed in the fact that there are multiple features from the real-life UNO game that are missing that upsets me:

  • Limit on max players
UNO is a game about testing your friendships and messing around with as many friends as you can. Which is why I'm so baffled as to why they cap the number of players at four. The UNO card game can be played with only TWO people or up to TEN. I can comprehend the challenge it is for developers to be able to set up servers that can hold 10 players and still make the game feel like it isn't broken (if you ask me though, I'd tell you UNO is best played when it is broken). This still doesn't justify why you can't play with only 2 or 3 friends. I can't speak for all of the community, but for many instances where I want to play UNO, I either have too many or too few people to start a game. It would suck having to look for someone else to play with to complete the lobby or having to play with bots, but it's just down right horrible having to deal with having too many friends to play UNO with. Because in those situations, you either have to kick someone out or find another game that everyone else has. That should never be the case when it comes to UNO.

  • Limited House Rules
The current rules that this game has to offer are jump in, match-to-draw, 7-0, challenge, and stacking Draw Twos with Draw Twos and Draw Fours with Draw Fours, respectively. Now, I'm not saying these are bad options for rules. In fact, some I had never even heard of and found much joy in playing with them. Those rules being jump in and 7-0. The only thing that I must critique here is the fact that people play UNO in various different ways and the game just isn't reflective of that. For example, whenever I play UNO in real life, the rules me and my friends set is that you are able to stack cards based on their symbol. If I had three Reverse Cards, all of different colors, I can put them down a the same time. The result of this would be that not only do I lose three cards rapidly, but I also reverse the game three times, meaning that it now goes in the reverse order (the way I remember which way it goes is that even numbers mean that the effect of the reverse is negated, whereas an odd number means it's still in effect). Seeing more rules such as this one would not only create a much more versatile playing environment, but it would also allow all fans of UNO to have the chance to experience such outlandish rules that can become personal favorites, as I mentioned above.

  • Minor Bugs
In every game I've played, I've had moments where right as I'm about to take my turn, the game completely freezes for me yet it is still active and waiting for me to play a card. I usually resolve this by not touching my mouse or typing on my keyboard until it unfreezes, which takes about 30-60 seconds. I wouldn't be addressing this issue if it weren't for it constantly happening in every match I play to either me or my friends.

  • Server Connections
Much like the problem above, I've been randomly kicked from a session for timing out when my game was acting totally normal. This is a major concern as I'm sure it's already being worked on, but it is extremely annoying.

Synopsis
Overall, I still really love this game. Whenever I have three friends of mine online and we're bored, I always ask "How about some UNO?" and suddenly the whole group lights right back up. The passion I have for this game is undying and I hope that can be seen throughout this review that I've written. I only wish for this game to grow and become even greater than what it is right now for us gamers across all consoles (except for the Switch, sorry guys :[ ). Until Ubisoft finally comes around and accomplishes in making this iteration of UNO into it's true form of glory, I'm going to have to rate this game a 7 out of 10. With a definitely strong recommendation for anyone who wants to goof off and have fun with their friends.
