GREAT improvement on the first game. So much more content, better performance, better style, better music... Keeps the good challenge the first game came with and just add so much more. I actually just died on MOM on hardmode after a 40 minutes playthrough - but I didn't feel annoyed, it was just that I wasn't ready for what was coming.

The graphics were greatly improved, in a GBA-ish 16-bit pixel art. The game is no longer limited on the frame rates, so it runs smooth as butter. Love the style of it.

The entire soundtrack was remade from scratch - and the tunes are way catchier than they were on the first game! some of them actually stayed on my head during the time I wasn't playing - it's nothing I'd keep thinking of or humming all the time, but it does help set the atmosphere for the game and it helps in immersion.

The controls are much better than in the first game, and joypads/joysticks are now suported! it is SO much better to play on an Xbox controller than it is to use the keyboard. I have to admit, though, I did swap some buttons around, but that's not much of a deal and probably my own fault.

The enemies are challenging and often come with a pattern that can be read or memorized, so none of them feel unfair - when you are hit or killed, it feels like it's your own fault rather than a sporadic AI thing. Also, the game has a hard mode - The "normal" is comparable to the first Isaac game, and hardmode has stronger enemies and all the content in the former expansion pack can only be accessed by playing on it.

Other things to highlight are the Seeds, that can be reused to play a map placing again if you like it (or to put cheats in the game, I've heard), the random modifiers on hardmode, such as not being able to see what the power-ups are until you pick them up, and the addition of content that wasn't in the first game.

Overall, this doesn't feel like a remake, but rather as a new game on it's own. I am having a lot of fun with it so far, and I do recommend it to everyone that likes action-packed, dungeon-crawling, random-generated levels. 9.5 out of ten!
