Fantastic RPG inspired by and almost just like the original SaGa trilogy on gameboy. It clearly aimed to replicate them while also making them more accessible and less obtuse, delivering on a satisfying and highly replayable game.

Like its spiritual predecessors, it's on the short side for a JRPG, but the pacing is excellent and due to the way the game works it's ultimately as long as you need it to be. There's something of an open-world approach in most sections of the game where you are free to explore and do the necessary plot goals in whatever order you wish, as the difficulty in each section's individual areas is overall consistent for that area in question.

There are a few different gameplay options for customizing how retro or modern it is in a few ways - I personally prefer random encounters over onscreen ones almost 100% of the time, and the encounter rate is right how I like it: enough to keep you trained and funded as well as be a consistent danger, but not so much that it becomes frustrating.

The diversity among the four playable races is strong, and my favorite party is as it was then one of each. I struggled a bit on figuring out how exactly I wanted to build my robot before eventually settling on a supportive tank for it of sorts, especially at the end when several robot-exclusive special items become easily obtainable. My main character was a monster as always, and my favorite race just like in SaGa itself. They have incredible potential and flexibility, rather than the incredible heights of specialization that humans (and especially espers) can reach statwise.

There were a few oddities and bugs my first time through - I was in contact with one of the developers through it and all my findings were very quickly relayed and fixed, showing how dedicated this team is to making this game great and greater. One unfortuantely stuck - my poor esper girl's portrait got seemingly permanently changed to a more masculine one after a certain patch. This only matters if you're playing in UI mode, which I did stop doing anyway due to shifting to a smaller monitor (which the game looks excellent on due to the lower resolution).

All in all, it's one of my new favorites and I highly recommend it to fans of the original SaGa trilogy or even those who like older JRPGs, particularly with a Gameboy aesthetic.

Absolutely fantastic mix of classic and modern Megaten concepts full of fun Touhou goodness. The sheer quality on this work alongside the scale of it for the absurdly low price is amazing and very much worth it. It's not perfect and could use some further refinement, which does seem to be on the way in some planned updates I'm very excited for. All in all, from someone who got into Touhou due to the extensive fangames made for it, this is without a doubt one of my most favorites.

An excellent snes/sfc era jrpg, and a great example of how to perfect a series. While I myself prefer the original trio of SaGa (released as Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 outside of Japan) and SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa has done a lot for the series and established a lot of its unique mechanics, which are further polished in the third and final entry. Plenty of characters to recruit, many dungeons to explore and tons of cool monsters to fight, loads of items to find, and a great number of techniques and spells to learn to customize your party. Definitely a must-have for any fan of classic jrpgs.
