First of all, this game is absolutely brilliant. The storytelling, the writing, the characterization and portrayal of said characters, all of it is nearly flawless. I love the use of the reactive RPG systems like those in Paper Mario, with dodging and parrying, and it feels satisfying to learn attack patterns and deal with foes that would otherwise be an instant game over. It is an amazing experience that I highly recommend*.

Second of all, that asterisk. I recommend this game if you can meet the recommended specs. As I mentioned, I adore the battle system, but in playing this game on a slightly lower-end system, I haven't been able to properly interact with it as the developers intended. There are certain instances where attack animations put a major strain on my system, and as such I either cannot parse where to make those inputs to parry/dodge, or those parry/dodge inputs are lost all together.

There's a certain optional fight in the post-game that really exemplifies this where parrying is absolutely required. If you don't parry the attacks, the boss will heal more damage than you can deal out consistently. Many of the attacks cause the strain and lag on my system that means I'm not able to engage with them properly, and therefore can't complete the fight as intended. My only option thus far has been to use gimmicky "cheese" methods, where I build up a certain character's gauge with lower damage over many turns until I can activate a massive damage buff and kill the boss in one hit. Trying to beat the fight the intended way results in me being in an endless loop of reaching that threshold where the attacks become impossible to parry on my system, and then the boss just heals back up to full.

I wish so badly that I could enjoy ALL of the beauty and care put into this game, but because I'm running just above the minimum specs, much of it has had to be filtered down or lost entirely so that my system can run it. It's especially strange because I've played other games with a similarly "realistic" style and they've run fine (such as FF7 Remake), but somewhere along the way the engine changed and now the follow-ups to these games that look exactly the same in the trailers become unplayable due to the system demands (such as FF7 Rebirth). And I know that a lot of effort goes into these games and their visual style and detail, so it hurts to see that effort be wasted for some who are forced to filter out those details so that the game performs well.

Hence why my recommendation for this game is if you can meet recommended specs. There is so much love put into all the details of this game, and it truly deserves to be experienced on a system powerful enough to handle those details.

An eternal classic. Where many other sapphic VNs tend towards soft, low-stakes slice of life stories, Heart of the Woods isn't afraid to tell of the deeper, often more terrifying sides of love, nor is it afraid to weave that into a higher stakes central narrative. The leads experience their falling in love messily, hesitantly and clumsily, and it feels unreservedly human.

Citizen Sleeper is a banger, but this game deserves just as much attention. It's much more simple with its systems and storytelling, but nonetheless a brilliant game with an excellent presentation.
