I started playing AoE2HD in the meantime as it was already in my library anyway but the controls and UI are hideous and there's no option to change the resolution or to zoom out (which is bizarre for a 'HD' game).
I loved those games - watching the farmer grow and harvest the wheat, the labourer take the wheat to the windmill, the windmill grind it into flour, the flour is taken to the bakery, the baker make bread, the bread is taken to the mine, the miner eats it and mines some coal, the other miner mines some iron, iron and coal is taken to the smelter to make bars, bars and coal taken to the weaponsmith to make weapons, weapons taken to the castle to equip troops.. etc. It was a game you could just watch for hours..
Right now, it's a bit boring. And I can't even relax and watch my people go about their lives because I always have to be doing something because there is little room for error..
Look at Civ V.
Now look at your game.
Look back at Civ V.
Look back at your game.
Look at your city.
Look at the barbarians.
You're on a horse.
Riding to defeat the barbarians from the city you're building The Great Wall in.
DISCOVERY!
Of the new technology that will begin a Golden Age for your society.
You're in a tank.
