I can recommend the Steam version of RetroArch if you want to use it on multiple devices and have your saves synced to Steam Cloud. Optionally you can switch to the nightly version to get the latest RetroArch updates.
I can seamlessly transition between PC (Arch Linux) and my Steam Deck (SteamOS) without losing any in-game progress.

Update 1 (40.2 hrs):
Beat the N64 game Donkey Kong 64 on the Steam Deck, did not experience any issues (except skill issues) at all.

The Steam version of RA is limited to older platforms and you won't be able to easily install cores like Dolphin and play GameCube/Wii games.

The last-minute intervention by the professional game designer KokoNuts resulted in a significant enhancement of the overall quality of the game.

Good old Vice City with Quality-of-Life features. Works well on Linux using Proton Experimental, even on the Steam Deck. However a native Linux build would be very appreciated. Initial setup is annoying, especially when having to enter a long password on the Deck. The startup time is slow due to the Rockstar Launcher and slighly faster when in offline/airplane mode. Occasionally experience performance issues after being Busted, Wasted or retrying a failed mission, but far fewer bugs than one would expect when skimming through the Steam Reviews.

Excellent game. Arena mode is really addictive. The settings are very minimal and perfect for such a game.
Game works excellent on Linux, a small configuration dialog is shown prior starting the game which allows choosing resolution and the screen to use. Unlike most other Linux games, Epistory handles multi-head setups properly.

Can recommend to people who want to test run their new keyboards.

P.S. Also, I'm better at it than my friends.
