Despite this game getting an overall mixed reception I think it is worth playing.

Story:

The main pitfall of this game is that they throw you slap bang in the middle of the story which causes a lot of confusion to an average player. If you are aware of the other media related to this game, then you have a general understanding of what is going on with the game.

The character episodes help fill in some gaps of the game.

I think the problems in the story stem from just the overall development of the game if anyone is familiar with how much of a mess that was

The Setting:

The world of this game is visually amazing. Point blank end of story. Anyone who thinks otherwise in my opinion is just blindly hating. Given the detail present with the world though, I find it very underwhelming that the amount of things you can interact with in the open world is so bare.

Characters:

The main party of 4 is easily the greatest aspect of this story. The dynamic between the party is great, you see various highs and lows with Noctis' party

The side characters on the other hand I feel leave something to be desired in terms of their presence of the story. To best summarize this sentiment is Lunafreya. A character who is critical to the plot had very little presence within the game itself.

Level Design and Progression:

Whoever designed the Lucius Ring segment needs to check their sanity. Everything else I relatively unbothered by.

Combat System:

This is in my opinion is the most divisive part of the game that can exasperate other issues with the game.

When there are very few mobs the combat is great and feels very flashy with Noctis.

Now when you enter combat with tougher mobs or just multiple enemies, this is where the game becomes unsufferable. Tougher mobs begin to slowly devolve into potion spam and fighting many mobs just becomes total chaos.

Conclusion:

Decent installment to the franchise has it's good and bads.

A solid entry to this franchise.

A darker tone compared to the other games with a good battle system. If you are familiar with the Tales series of games, this one is worth playing.

Very solid remake of a classic JRPG. An easy recommendation.
