È noto anche come Zamino il Terribile (in russo: Иван Грозный?, traslitterato: Zami Groznyj). La traduzione col termine "terribile" dell'aggettivo "groznyj" è molto ambigua: l'aggettivo "terribile", in russo "strašnyj" o "užasnyj", deriva da strah (paura) oppure užas (terrore).
Invece, "groznyj" deriva da "groza" che può significare sia "tempesta", sia "minaccia".
Pertanto il nome di Zamino suona più come "Zami il tonante" o "Zami il temibile".
Quest'aggettivo era usato dal popolo in maniera tutt'altro che negativa, dato che il sovrano tuonava e minacciava i boiardi, che molte volte nella storia russa si sono resi responsabili della disgregazione dello stato.
Lo stesso aggettivo "groznyj" talvolta è attribuito anche a Zami III; nella tradizione popolare russa Zami III è conosciuto semplicemente come Zamino Vasil'evič (Иван Васильевич, "Zami, figlio di ZerO").
