I really like the idea behind this game. Mining resources, improving your efficiency at gathering them, all to fuel a defense that protects you while you mine more resources. I do wish the upgrade tree was a little deeper, but at the same time the game strikes a nice level of simplicity with it, so not a big deal. It's a fun time if you like rougelikes, especially with heavy resource gathering.

This is a solid little indie project. Definitely not perfect, but also definitely good enough that I'd want to see more done with it.

The Good:
The art is easily the standout part of this game. Maybe not quite Cuphead tier, but certainly close. The animations are smooth and expressive, I like the character designs quite a lot, and the music isn't too bad either, albeit a bit repetitive.

The Mid:
The gameplay is not quite as inspired as I'd like it to be. Or maybe too inspired depending on how you look at it. The gameplay is basically 1 for 1 Cuphead, which would be great if I felt like it was mechanically better than Cuphead, but it just isn't. The game doesn't do anything new from Cuphead, and only takes things away. There are less weapons, no perk/upgrade system, and the combat itself feels worse due to the almost complete lack of i frames. I don't remember exactly how i frames worked in Cuphead, but I don't remember ever having an issue with it. The dodge in this game doesn't feel that great, though. There were a few attacks it was particularly helpful with, but most the time it honestly lead me to taking more damage than if I just sidestepped attacks. I also frequently found myself getting two hit by attacks, particularly in the first phase when there can be many hitboxes on screen at once due to how short the i frame period is on taking damage. I get that the game wants to be difficult, as was Cuphead, but this just feels artificial at best. Were the game to be developed into a more fully fleshed out idea, I really think it would be beneficial to refine the combat a bit and also to find some gameplay mechanic that really sets it apart from Cuphead.

The Bad:
The bad is mostly just all the extra stuff this game doesn't have. As far as I can tell, there is no full screen option, and there's also no options to rebind controls. Were this a longer game, these would have been deal breakers for me. No full screen is just annoying, especially on a larger display. I frequently found myself mixing up the buttons for your charge attack and the dodge, causing me to dodge into the boss and take damage instead of firing the attack like I wanted. Being able to rebind would have helped significantly. And yes I was using a controller. I get that settings menus are never fun to set up when making a game, I've worked on my fair share of solo projects before, but it is such an essential quality of life and compatibility feature that leaving it out is just unacceptable.

To sum up:
I have a lot of respect for this game. It is clear a lot of effort went into it, and for $3 I can't complain too much. I'm glad to support the dev. One of the hardest parts for indie projects is having to wear every single hat in the development team, and I think that RBW did this incredibly well all things considered. But there is also definite room for improvement. I don't know what the road map for this project is, but at the very least I hope they sit down and add a settings menu.

Like Yakuza had a strange rhythm game love child. The visual style is top notch, the music is great so far, and the combat is incredibly satisfying. The demo is only a small slice of the game, but I can already tell this game is gonna go crazy once it is fully released.

PEAK is an absolute blast to play with friends.

This is yet another small scale coop game focused more on being a social experience than just a straight up game, similar to Lethal Company, R.E.P.O or Content Warning. This one is more relaxed though, focused on climbing up mountains rather than navigating through monster infested facilities.

That being said, I would really only recommend this game if you have people in mind to play with. Solo play is available and works fine, but the coop is really what elevates this game, pun intended.

I previously left a negative review due to a crashing issue with AMD graphics cards, but it seems they've fixed it. The game is cheap, and it is a good time if you have friends to play with, which I fortunately do.

An intriguing premise, combined with amazing art direction, and actually innovative combat. I typically don't like turn based games, but game's combat is different. It still reaps the benefits of strategy provided by the classic turn based formula, but actually keeps the player engaged with shooting, parrying, and dodging, so it doesn't just feel like clicking through menus and watching repetitive combat cut scenes. Instead of every fight just being a stat check, the game allows for very skilled players to take on enemies who are potentially far stronger than them if they have learned the enemy's moves well enough to get off dodges and parries. This is definite GOTY material. It probably won't run very well if you don't have a decently powerful system, but as long as you aren't too lacking in that department, I highly recommend.

Update after clearing most the game: It only gets better. Absolute masterpiece.

This is an incredibly well executed remaster. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and while the gameplay does show its age in some places, they made improvements where it really counts while leaving the rest of the game in tact. In this regard, I believe this remaster will be a great experience both for veterans, and for newcomers like myself.

The biggest drawback is the performance. Some complain about stuttering, and while I did experience some, it wasn't very common and didn't hurt the experience all too much. The graphical demand is most certainly there, however. Even if you have an above average PC, don't expect to be running this at max settings with high framerates, and you'll definitely want to turn on DLSS/FSR/XESS. Framerates can tank especially hard out in dense nature areas, though in dungeons it is typically fine. I can't say this is due to poor optimization, though, I genuinely believe it is just that demanding. Hopefully a few hardware generations down the line it will be easier to run for the masses. For now, proceed with caution if you don't have a pretty beefy PC.

No bugs. No crashes. No frame drops. Just fun. The graphics at times are definitely dated even at max settings (specifically when sailing), but man the naval combat is unexpectedly great. It isn't super deep or realistic, but it is still a great time. The story so far has been solid, about what I would expect from a yakuza game. If you didn't like previous brawler style yakuza games, I don't think this one will change your mind too much, but the combat does veer more on the side of a hack and slash at times if that is more your style. I'm more than anything just happy to see my main man Majima finally get his own dedicated game.

This is as close to black magic as you can really get.

It certainly isn't flawless, there are visible artifacts with both the frame generation and super resolution, but from my experience most of the time you have to be actively looking for it. Running on 2X mode with a 3060 Ti, the biggest area that frame generation struggles is with UI elements. Given the right conditions, some UI elements will shake and shimmer about. Things like quest objectives and player name tags. It isn't a constant issue though, only sometimes. There have only been a handful of times I've had noticeable artifacting in the game world itself. Your mileage may vary depending on the games you play, however. Pushing framegen beyond 2X only causes more artifacting the higher you go. 3X is still usable in most scenarios I've found, though not quite as clean. 4X starts to get quite messy.

I've used super resolution less. I've found I prefer running the game at native resolution 60 fps and using framegen, since super resolution has honestly impacted visuals more than frame gen has in my experience. Issues like weird changes in contrast and jagged and muttled edges on objects are pretty constant. That being said, I haven't taken the time to really sit down and find what works. Your mileage may prove better than mine if you are willing to look into it a bit more. That being said, this does enable super resolution on literally anything you want, so now you at least have the option.

The biggest area where frame gen is useful is in games that are natively locked to 60 FPS. I've put several hours into Dark Souls Remastered running on 3X framegen with next to no problems and at a smooth 180 fps. I've heard it is also fantastic for emulation, though I've personally not tried this yet. It's also good for capping games at 60 and generating the frames for a more consistently smooth experience. In games where I'd typically run at 100+ fps with occasional lag spikes down to 60, instead I'm getting a 100% smooth 120 or 180 fps constantly with no dips. This is, of course, at the cost of some occasional minor artifacting. I've not even had any noticeable increase in input latency.

Overall, I'm super impressed. I've tried it with Dark Souls Remastered, Grounded, and Valheim, all games with very different artstyles. All of them ran great. Once again, not absolutely perfect, but the minor imperfections are very easy to shrug off and half the time I don't even really acknowledge them. This is a must buy for anyone who games on PC. It's dirt cheap, if it doesn't work well with the game you are playing you don't have to enable it. But I'm yet to experience a game that it works particularly poorly with. Overall, 9/10. Looking forward to more improvements in the future.

Early Access Review
This game is an absolute blast with friends. It manages to strike a perfect balance of comedy, fun, horror, and serious gameplay that has me absolutely addicted. The monsters in the game are quite unique, and most all of them feel balanced with clear counter-play that makes it fun to learn about their behavior and strategize how to play around them, rather than just spending the whole game running away and not actually being able to do anything. There are a couple monsters that are a bit overtuned at the moment, but it seems like the dev is aware and attempting to fix them.

The main issue I see with the game is that, because of the ever-raising price quota, unlike most rogue-like games that allow the player to progress to the point where they out-scale the rising difficulty curve, this one doesn't have a way for players to scale, meaning that it is inevitable to lose at a certain point, seemingly around the 5k-6k quota mark from what I have seen, and that is assuming you have a full 4 player squad. While there is PLENTY of gameplay to be had trying to progress to this point, because it takes many hours learning the game to be able to get anywhere near that quota, it would be nice for there to be an actual end game beyond just succumbing to the inevitable quota cap with no feasible way to combat it. Sure, there are mods which can help with this, but I am not reviewing any of those mods, just the vanilla game. Another downside of this is that the game is significantly harder solo, so if you don't have friends to play this with and don't feel like playing with strangers and randos, this probably isn't for you. It is definitely intended as a coop experience with at least 2 people, though I would recommend you try for 3 if not the full 4. It makes the game much better over all.

In the end, the game is a blast, and will offer plenty of screams, laughs, and great memories. It has some issues which can already be solved with mods, but could potentially be sorted out officially in later updates now that the game has been raking in the profits. Highly recommend, assuming you have friends to play with, or are willing to make new friends.
