I wouldn't normally write reviews but I spent $42 bucks on this so I'll get my moneys worth by reflecting on it.

In short if you're a cheap skate like me I would wait for the game to go on sale again and get it. I think just above $40 bucks is a fair price for a game with this much scale and love put into it.

In long..... I have never played a souls game before and don't really like fantasy stuff/ metroidvanias so in some aspects this is a hard sell for me. I definitely like this more Lovecraft art style tho so that peeked my interest when this game came out. I don't play single player games much either but knowing that there's a seamless MP mod as well put me over the edge to get it on sale. After getting it I wasn't crazy about the game play. I just kept dying and didn't know where to go and was close to refunding before my 2 hours were up. Something compelled me to keep going though so I pushed though. The first 10 hours of this game are the worst but once you get strong then you can't put the game down because you're ready to just grind out more of the game. That's the biggest selling point for me, you really feel your character get stronger, this game is basically Realm of the Mad God in 3D.

My largest frustrations are how vague and directionless you can be. There were times where I just got lost and didnt know how to progress the story. Not sure if im just dumb or that there are some pretty conceited things you have to do that you wouldn't normally think of if you havent played these games before. This is partially my fault for not caring about the story and skipping a lot of the dialog but if you skip what people say at certain points you can't relearn that information. The map is equal parts helpful as it can be confusing, the terrain drove me crazy sometimes trying to find my way up somewhere only to have misread the topography. Don't get me started on the horse parkour sections that sucked too but luckily you dont have to do it much. Anywho there are a bunch of random things that make this game annoying that have nothing to do with the difficulty of the bosses so I think that is a bit of a turn off.

That is to say there are things outside of the core gameplay that are very annoying which is rough because if your main gameplay loop is dying and trying again you should avoid any other part of your game to be frustrating. This is turning more into a rant than a review but the game over comes those flaw by a wide margin, i just wish the path forward was just a bit less obfuscated.

A small warning for anyone who gets first person motion sickness, I don't get it a ton, I can play minecraft, battle field, csgo, and other games but this one was hard on my brain. The being in the cave and constant lighting things up and then getting dark again just gave me a head ache. Even with view bobbing off and screen shake at its lowest I still was rough.

Neat concept and the game play was smooth and it looks cool but I can't recommend if you have had similar experiences to me. So not really the games fault and I bet it's fun, it's just an super accessible .

By far one of the best free games in the racing genre, offering many hours of fun to be had, and many opportunity to customize tracks and cars.
