I thought this game was pretty good, and then I got to the higher stakes and it made me question every single hour of this game I had played beforehand. As you go higher, the game just starts ripping your ability to play it out of your hands in one giant chunk after another and it makes the core mechanics of the game start to feel really flimsy and poorly implemented. Your discards become useless, your hand size becomes garbage, booster packs basically don't exist anymore and the game scales so fast that you just have to try and find something good really early on or your run is just pointless. This leads to spending hours in the first two antes struggling to find ANYTHING usable. I can't understate how much different and how much worse of an experience the highest difficulty of this game is compared to its base game. When I was playing the demos, I thought this game might have real staying power. A couple weeks after its release, I think it might actually just be a really, really shallow game that's gonna fall apart very quickly.

Early Access Review
Frost Prime made this game look way more fun than it actually is.

If you want an incremental game, this is an example of one!

It's almost gotten boring just how good Supergiant is at this. Dripping with style, amazingly voice acted and weaving gameplay and story flawlessly. The combat is fast and cathartic and hitting stuff feels really good, especially when you start stacking upgrades and getting your combos how you want them. The only problem is the roguelike nature of the game can get repetitive, especially when you're dying a lot, but it kind of works because it fits the themes of the game.

Game is so busy trying to outsmart the player, it forgot to be fun. I could put up with the grindy, repetitive nature of the game, I could put up with stripping you of your gold and making every upgrade cost more each time you spend your gold, leading to a feeling where buying small upgrades or trying to experiment feels extremely punishing, I could put up with most of the classes being worthless and most of the debuffs being obnoxious, I could put up with the very bad feeling combat. The breaking point is when it gave me an item that had no beneficial effects and just made me spray gold everywhere when I got hit. This came from a shrine that otherwise only gives beneficial effects. It was called Hedgehog's Curse. That's very cute. It's also the point where I uninstalled.

Do not recommend unless you like games that have no respect for your time.
