It's a really fun game. One of my favourites.
But it's broken.

The multiplayer is absolutely miserable, with the game inevitably desyncing after a while, and even if you rehost it just desyncs again immediately. And it takes like 10 minutes to join a game, because the nakama system simply takes that long to download a 30mb file. And it's the only way to play the game!

All of this with me and my wife playing together, at the same table across from each other. We could easily connect our PCs with a short ethernet cable, but there is no option to play LAN, no option to somehow resolve the desync, it just sucks.

Also, 16gb of ram is not enough for this game. It constantly crashed until we made a giant swap partition (downloaded more ram basically) but that's not something most people will be able to do very easily. So yeah, only get this game if you have 32gb of ram, maybe 64gb. Might not run otherwise, unless you make a swap partition.

So the game is great, from a design side, from the side of being fun and cool, but from a technical side it's been broken for a very long time and multiplayer is borderline unplayable. Can't wait to see how much ram you'll need with the DLC adding all of Asia. 128gb? 256gb? It will probably desync more as well.

It's unacceptable. I love this game. I think the DLC are actually pretty fair with how much stuff they add to the game. But the desyncing in multiplayer (and also the actual, literaly 10 minutes it takes to download a gosh darn 30mb save file) is so bad.

Paradox devs, I don't know what you're doing, I don't know why these issues are not fixed or even made better years after the game came out, I don't know if the lack of LAN play is some kind of stupid, worthless anti-piracy measure, but for god's sake please do something about this.

This game is absolutely delightful. You're a sweet little mouse hell-bent on helping people in a charming little French town. A beautiful world, cute and funny characters, really satisfying gameplay and fun puzzles, completing the game is a joy as well and there are great quality of life features to assist with it.

It's a pretty short game, but every moment is nice. There's tons of detail, it's gorgeous looking, it's sweet, cozy, funny and beautiful. A true mouseterpiece.

It's one of my comfort games now. The devs are super nice as well. Their other game Squeakross is great too, with a really generous demo. I'm definitely gonna watch what they make next.

Also, it's fun on a CRT TV, though letterboxed. :)

Edit: I originally wrote this review when I was 14 or something, now as an adult revisiting this game is a joy, and I really appreciate all the little details, the signs and writing on walls and especially the characters' banter. As a kiddo I didn't even notice these details but I absolutely love how this game tells stories, show these characters getting to know each other, joking around, coming up with names for the special infected etc. Obviously it's left 4 dead and doesn't need more praise than it's been getting since it came out in 2009 but I did wanna add a more substantial review in an edit to my 14yo self saying "Awesome!!!" and it's nice to point out that having grown up (and learned english) I now have a deeper appreciation of the game and I'm able to notice all the storytelling, which as a kid I didn't really notice.
