An extremely solid monster-collecting turn-based RPG that successfully adapts most of Monster Hunter's quirky theme and mechanics to nth degree. Complete with mixing-and-matching Monstie's Gene for personalized 'sets', down to the monsters' color scheme.

However, in an attempt to satisfy its aging fanbase and expansive worlds ambitions, Capcom had to neuter its rosters, dungeons, and arguably a part of its personality. And yes, still no rideable Tetsucabra here.

Update 14-02-2026: No need to call Golden Palace, the buttons are no longer in Chinese.

Decent game in vacuum (discounting the messed up texture uncompression system), but it completely removed core elements that made the series iconic.

Update 30-01-2026: January patch brought much needed performance improvement and additional settings. Still doesn't fix the lackluster gameplay (obviously) and my rig (5700X3D, RX 7600 XT 16GB, 16GB RAM) still struggles to reach 60FPS in most areas even with the lowest settings.

Update 21-02-2026: The February patch and additional CPU/graphics options tweak managed to make my Custom Low settings to run the game on 60FPS most of the time now. More stress tests on more maps/inclemency weathers still need to be done, but at least it runs "properly" at the time of writing.
However, again, compared to older games it still lacks the charm and frictions by streamlining too much of its iconic mechanics.

Fun and high-octane horde shooter-slasher that's letdown by the current day plague of making everything as an online game/game-as-a-service product along with RNG drop mechanics in an attempt to manage user retention.

Amazing soundtrack tho.

Fun game, but RS's and GU's cooldown/bar crap still sucks Rathalos' (fire) balls.

A decent turn-based RPG for those people who like the Monster Hunter world for the unique monsters. Wrapped in a simple yet heart-warming story about the bond between Riders and monsters, the game will also satisfy RPG fans looking to grind their days away since it allows you to mix-and-match out of more than 100 skills to create your very own Monstie (monster partner) -- unfortunately, "color editing" feature is no longer included[thenerdstash.com].
However, if you enjoy the Monster Hunter series for its heart-thumping action and fashioning monsters into one-of-a-kind mixed armor sets, best to stay away from this one.

Badly written scam with adequate production value. Just look at Liz-Arts' website now.

Update 12-01-2026: Apparently scenario writer Takahashi Wataru and Sekai Project released CODE:02 to 05 as light novels. If you're intrigued only by the chuunige story, I guess at least you can get a closure.

Monster Hunter: World sukses menjual apa yang dijanjikan oleh judulnya. Bukan buat semua orang, tapi kalau kamu suka ide sederhana "berburu monster raksasa", jangan lewatkan gim Action yang satu ini.
4/4 - Wajib Beli

Monster Hunter: World successfully sells the idea conveyed by its title alone. The slower and methodical combat system compared to its Capcom brethren such as Devil May Cry might not please everyone, but if you like the simple concept of "hunting giant monsters" with "giant sticks", do not miss this particular Action title.
4/4 - Must Buy

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE start its humble origin as a part of cheap games collection Simple 2000 on PS2 -- and EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 definitely haven't forgotten its roots. Sandlot manages to strengthen EARTH DEFENSE FORCE's simple core while streamlining other clunkier elements, so it's (much) easier to pickup by new players while giving new toys to play for veterans.

Basically what EARTH DEFENSE FORCE is selling are hundreds of enemies on screen and destructible buildings while sacrificing graphics, framerate, and even smooth control. But not anymore. Gone the awkward character controls and every classes got major buffs, not just weapons balancing but also mobility and quality-of-life aspect.

The biggest upgrade examples are: Ranger have a dedicated run button (don't have to rely on dodge-rolling for mobility), carpet bombing area-of-effect designator for Air Raider, and equipment slots for Fencer and Wing Diver.
Meanwhile major quality-of-life improvements are: 'aura' for easier loot pickups and this time around all loot are distributed (not equally) to all classes in the end of a level instead of just for the class you use. Definitely makes grinding weapons and armor/health much less of a chore!

Even with all those upgrades there's no lack of challenge. New enemies such as Colonist and Cosmonaut, giant humanoid armed with plasma machine gun, shotgun, cannon, and flamethrower, will definitely push your skills and force you to rethink how to handle a level, choosing which weapons are good for crowd control or one-on-one with the limited inventory slots. There's also new kaiju spectacle called Archelus that rolls and shoots bombs all over the map to devastating effects.

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 as a reboot did not change the 'classic' formula too much in an ill-conceived attempt to grab more audiences. Sandlot just fixes what does not really work and making the game more fun to play for both their biggest and/or potential fans. If you want to get into this series -- or baiting your friends into it -- EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5 is definitely the one to go.
