The Makarov pistol or the PM (in Russian Пистоле́т Мака́рова) is a Soviet made semi automatic pistol curated by the late Nikolay fyodorovich Makarov and was the standard issue pistol amongst the USSR. It's history began after the second world war where the soviets reinstituted the program of replacing their old fashioned issue TT pistols and Nagant revolvers; Several engineers took part in a contest, including Korovin, Baryshev, Voyevodin, Simonov, Rakov, Klimov, Lobanov, Sevryugin, and Makarov.

Special emphasis was placed on who gets the prize for the new standard issue pistol, expectedly Makarov's design went to the podium, due to its reliability and simplicity, it's quite impressive for it to take copycat inspiration from the Walther PP. As Makarov PM became the standard issue sidearm of the USSR, the PM was issued to Non-commissioned officers, police, special forces, and tank and Aviation crews. It remained in broader fronts for the service of the Soviet military and police until and after the end of the USSR in 1991. Variants of the pistol remain in production in Russia, China, and Bulgaria.

In the U.S., surplus Soviet and East German military Makarov's are considered as eligible curio and relic items by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, because the countries of manufacture, the USSR and the GDR, no longer exist. The Makarov PM design went for a all-steel construction, frame-fixed barrel handgun. In it's blowback design, the only force holding the slide closed is that of the recoil, the spring of course, upon firing, the barrel and slide do not have to unlock, as do locked-breech-design pistols. Blowback designs are simple and more accurate than designs using a recoiling, tilting, or articulated barrel, but they are limited practically by the weight of the slide, the 9×18mm cartridge is a practical cartridge in blowback-operated pistols; producing a respectable level of energy from a gun of moderate weight and size.

The PM is heavy for its size by modern US commercial handgun standards, largely because in a blowback pistol, the heavy slide provides greater inertia to delay opening of the breech until internal pressures have fallen to a safe level. Other, more powerful cartridges have been used in blowback pistol designs, but the Makarov is widely regarded as particularly well balanced in its design elements.
Copy pistols were produced since 1960. Arsenal 10 produced them between 1970 and 2007 in Bulgaria as per say due to their relationship with the USSR is of no wonder but, with overall reliable and simple design, the pistol that struck fear amongst the NATO personnel and the name Makarov rings a bell around the guns in COD-MW franchise and it's main antagonist. Now its only listed price is between 500 or more in the market on a decent condition Makarov PM and you get the best from Bulgaria too, copied but still nice. So what do you think?
