My playtime should speak for itself how much I enjoy Rimworld. I have been playing since early access, and haven't stopped since. I have also never "Beat" the game and gotten off planet, and have many colonies I've run up to 100+ simulated years. Rimworld is unlike most games you could get your hands on, and is a good "background" game if you like the basic premise.

As it is, without mods, Rimworld's gameplay loop pairs colony sim with story generator and tower defense. You can alter that via included world generating and AI storyteller settings to be as grindy or easy as you want. But... the biggest thing about Rimworld? It's modability. Don't like the graphics? Tons of mods to change that from hair to face to even body. Don't like the lack of animations for fights and want something more immersive? Tons of mods for animations and more immersive settings. Don't like the space theme, Starship trooper vibes or robot overlords? There's mods that you can use to turn it into a wild west or Medieval game, even so much as blocking or removing content that is too "Sci-fi" or "Modern". Want more variation in the "Races"? There's mods for that too with or without the DLC. I exclusively play this game as a medieval/fantasy fort builder, as an example, with a ton of mods to change graphics to be more appealing to what I'm looking for.

If you LIKE the idea of a colony builder/storytelling game with some aspects of raid, starvation and strife, but do not like something about rimworld and are on the fence about getting it, check the workshop and see what you can do about ameliorating whatever you don't like, whether in graphics, animations, mechanics or gameplay.
