To make things clear, my main issue with this game is the narrative. The gameplay, art direction, and core mechanics have all improved and been refined in ways that are clearly evident throughout your playthrough. Creatures have awesome designs and unique attack patterns that throw you off at first but become easy enough to predict after one or two tries. Minor boss fights have stepped up a level, and the endgame content is abundant and very enjoyable. Some realms are so expansive they could have been games on their own. Overall, the gameplay deserves a solid 9/10. The devs, artists, and designers went all out—so much so that I’d often stop just to admire the smaller details in the environments.

Main characters like Kratos, Atreus, and Freya have been fleshed out well and have grown in ways that suit their particular demeanors. Minor characters like Brok and Sindri have grown in a way that perfectly complements the main duo. The balance between Kratos and Atreus, and Brok and Sindri, feels harmonious—their personalities complementing each other like a well-crafted joint. The new characters, however, fall somewhat flat in my opinion. Few memorable personalities stand out, and those that do get so little screen time that they may as well not even exist.

Which brings me back to my main point—the narrative.

As is all too common nowadays, writing has become about cramming as much content into a single work as possible. Ragnarök suffers from this exact issue. There are so many open-ended plot points—and others that could simply vanish without changing the game in the slightest. What was supposed to be a grand tale, something the first game captured perfectly, ends up feeling like a cauldron of mismatched archetypes that are somehow expected to blend together and create a satisfying story.

Steam only offers a yes-or-no recommendation, but I can’t simply recommend this game if you’re a fan of the first. However, I would still recommend it as a purchase, simply because the gameplay is fantastic and well worth the hours I put in for that alone.
