replaying the conversation in their head. analyzing every text.
staring at their phone waiting for the good morning message
i went on a great first date and immediately queued up
because now i need to see something more important
how we play together
the date was fantastic. vibes were there. conversation flowed.
she held her chopsticks with precision. all green flags.
but a cs player's brain doesn't stop at dinner
it immediately goes "okay but what does she look like in a duo game"
does she igl or bait.
does she tilt after a bad play or reset.
does she give up at first death or lock in.
these aren't deal breakers
these are just things i NEED to know
because you can learn a lot over sushi
but you learn EVERYTHING in premier
the way someone plays cs tells you more about who they are than any first date ever could
so yeah the sushi was great
but tonight were duo queueing
everyone is on the dance floor with someone
i'm at the table alone surrounded by empty glasses
i used to have a CS duo for this kind of thing
someone to sit with when the music was too loud
someone who made these things feel like less of a 1v9
now it's just me and empty glasses that look like my recent match history
started strong. fell off. and now i'm just here
watching everyone else group up while i'm in pit by myself wondering how i got here
the DJ is playing love songs and my brain is calculating how many ranked games i could be playing right now instead of feeling this
at least in solo queue when you're alone it's a CHOICE
my friend just got married to the love of his life
i'm sitting here realizing the last time i was at an event i had a duo
now i have 6 empty glasses and a phone with no notifications
funny how you go from duo to solo in everything all at once
heading home. queuing.
at least in ranked you can still carry alone
we don't talk about it. it just happens.
6pm. both online. she sends the invite. or i do. neither of us acknowledges who sent it first.
the discord call is 90% silence. no "how have you been." no "seeing anyone?" just comms.
"flashing long."
"he's lit 50."
that's the whole conversation.
here's the thing though.
she knows when i'm going in before i comm it.
i know her flashes better than the last 6 geesters i've played with.
637 games of duo queue doesn't care relationship status.
we'll go 7-2 together. maybe 8-1 on a good night.
then it's "gg" and we're offline for another 2 months.
no follow up. no "we should do this more often."
because we both know what this is.
it's not friendship rekindling or even nostalgia.
it's that neither of us has found better synergy.
and that's the uncomfortable truth about duoing.
some people have exes they still ♥♥♥♥.
i have an ex i still duo with.
honestly not sure which is worse.
