Early Access Review
Wow, what a surprise. I'm not usually one to pick up early access games as I would prefer to play a finished project, but after seeing this on the Humble store, I immediately fell in love with the pixel/glitch art style. I checked out the gameplay video and decided to give it a chance.
Crawl starts up as if it's an old school arcade game, asking you to insert coin and enter you initials. Up to four players can play via couch co-op (no online unfotunately, but I think the fast paced gameplay lends itself better to local co-op) using keyboard, mouse or controllers. One player starts as the human character advancing through the dungeon collecting money, loot or finding the exit to the dungeon. The other three player take control of ghosts who can summon creatures or possess traps in the dungeon with the purpose of destroying the human character. Once a ghost player has killed the human player, they become the human. End game happens once a human character destroys the main boss.
As you progress, your character levels up and can buy weapons and equipment that change the way the game is played. In between levels, you can upgrade the monster creatures you send out as a ghost, making the game more difficult as you progress. It's very nicely balanced and I never felt like one player was too strong or weak against other players. While this game is meant to be played with multiple players, I found single player with bots surprisingly challenging, and at times forgot I was playing against the computer.
I highly recomend Crawl if your looking for a frantic couch co-op game to play with your friends, or just looking for a fast paced arcade style game to play by yourself. With the added promise from the developers of more creatures, dungeons, and items to be added in the future, as well as the $10 price tag, you really can't go wrong with this one.
