  • Spikes kill you instantly
  • Water either kills you instantly, or you can swim through it, you never know
  • Dodging kinda sucks and if you dodge into a spike pit you're dead

It's a charming game for sure, very beautiful with an atmospheric soundtrack, but also difficult due to the insta-kill spikes and the dodge mechanic. But I wouldn't say it's a bad game, you can get your fun's worth out of it.

The screenshots look sooo good. People say the game looks sooo good. The moment I got into the game, it was a laggy mess. Like, I've never played the game before tonight, not on mobile and not on console, and the display settings window was showing over 100 fps for my settings (set to high textures, medium settings) but it looks so gritty and the character creation took me way longer than it should have due to all the lagginess. Anyways, the character models are really gritty and by the time I got into the game it look like everything was mashed into one....like a horrible blend of dull and brownish colors looking like we went back to the 16-bit days just entering the 32-bit era where everything was starting to look better but still had that 16-bit stink, and can you guess how hard it lagged? Despite the game itself telling me I was at 100fps in-game I could barely move without frames dropping upon every step. I didn't even wanna start the tutorial, I can get behind the graphics looking bad on my end but the lag made the game unplayable. Which is sad because I can run TERA at high settings and it still looks beautiful and maintains a steady enough FPS to play it (and its free....shhhh....) meanwhile Black Desert Online just...for some reason looks bad on my end. I feel like I got duped, but it was 4 bucks I spent so oh well. Glad I didn't get the Traveler's or Explorer's pack.... Maybe the game will get better, I'm not sure what the issue is. It just looks bad and has terrible FPS on my end. I can't care enough to keep playing it tonight, I've got another game to try out before bed.

Early Access Review
go play Quake III

or play the first two for a unique 90s FPS experience

Edit: 7/27/19
I'd like to come back and say that this game still has realllllly bad loading times and also still has some aimbots which is a major problem in FFA game modes. I guess the developers just stopped caring about their game.

They deceived us

Edit 3/3/2020

I honestly have no clue why I "didn't" recommend this game. It's actually kinda fun for what it is.

Definitely an excellent game from legendary developers id Software. Coming from the Doom series, this game was the first truly 3D game they've made, and they did an excellent job at creating complex maps for players to explore and find secrets, with the addition of swimming underwater being added to the play (something that wasn't done with Doom until fans got their hands on it).

The game features over 30 levels (including 4 secret levels) across four episodes, then you face off against the final boss, Shub-Niggurath. You go into the slipgate, blast some baddies, run through the portal, blast some demons, grab the rune, and run out of the portal taking you back to Earth. Sounds simple, but the levels will leave you dying and retrying constantly. I do recommend making quicksaves (F6) to load (F9) when you come to a part you've died on a few times.

There's only so few things I can really complain about this game, so I'll talk about them.

The Super Shotgun is almost practically useless. Using the same damage as two shots from the regular Shotgun, no matter how close you are, and having terrible spread. The reload speed on the weapon also seems slightly slower than the time it takes to fire two shots from the Shotgun.

The Super Nailgun: the fastest way to mow down enemies, but also the fastest way to use up enough ammo to not be able to take down whatever's left. Just stick with the regular Nailgun.

Episode 4. It starts off with a confusing maze of an underground sewer system that is sometimes hard to navigate, that is until you've figured it out. However, it's still quite confusing to explore if you're trying to find the secrets. After that, it gets good. It's the final episode, it wants to push its limits. However, it pushes it a bit too much. Once you reach the last few levels you're thrown the Quad Damage so much that the game becomes a bit too easy, however also at times it seems almost pointless to pick up, since you've taken out every enemy around and the powerup will run out once you reach an area with enemies. That's pretty much all I have to complain about this episode, it's a mixed bag.

The game is great, and if you haven't played it back in the day now's your chance, if you have played it back in the day, well go play it again.
