This was right up my alley. It took me a little to catch on to the games visual language, but once I did I had a great time. I think the enemy design is really spooky and unsettling, and the game got a good amount of legit screams out of me too!

I play horror games to get scared, so this game did it's job. I also found the narrative to be really engrossing and fascinating. Still thinking about it days later. It's definitely worth the prince IMO. If you enjoy Amnesia-style horror with stalkers you can't fight back against, this game will scratch that itch for sure :3

From the snappy, well written dialogue, to the disarmingly excellent musical production, to the sort of bouncy and smooth game-feel, which feels incredible to play, great vehicle controls, and what seems to be a highly expressive and creative gameplay loop, I can't wait to play the full version and start solving this mystery!

For the kind of gamer who enjoys tough, deep, granular RPG systems! With the easy ability to make it tougher, and soon with Hardcore mode, it'll be, in my opinion, the best immersive western RPG I've played in a decade. I loved the first game bu this is just punching in an entirely heavier weight class now. It's so much better.

The amount of crazy, silly stories I have from my adventures. The connection to the environment I've gained. I can navigate both maps without any in-game map now, just from riding around and building up that familiarity. The story, the characters, the politics, the history, the combat, it all is just so much fun and offers so many ways to approach how to play it. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Early Access Review
If you enjoy highly granular, extremely detailed survival sims, this one basically takes the cake as far as zombie games go. This game keeps growing and becoming better and better, and it has been a pleasure watching it happen over the years.

With NPCs on the way next, and MP finally more accessible, I strongly recommend this title. Project Zomboid is far and away my all time favorite zombie survival sim. Great game, great mods, extremely tough and unforgiving, this is the story of how you died.

Have fun!

A game that would be totally lame if it was on desktop, is actually incredibly fun in VR. There is something to be said for how it feels to need to know how to actually reload a gun. It just feels good and has great mod support.

Friday the 13th: The Game is finally here. It has been nearly 30 years since the NES game first came out and this was beyond overdue for a modern update. Gun Media and Illfonic, having successfully crowdfunded the game, launched it on the 26th of May to a veritable army of waiting gamers.

The launch was pretty hectic, and full of issues and problems. Which is why I've waited to submit this review at least one week.

Having seen the effort they've been putting into supporting the game in this extremely hectic week, I feel satisfied with my impressions 63 hours in.

In Friday the 13th, you assume one of two roles. Counselors and Jason Voorhees. You'll be spending the majority of your time as a Camp Counselor, which is the core experience. As this is a horror game after all. The rounds last 20 minutes if you don't all die or escape before then. That rarely happens. The goal is to escape the camp by various means. You can escape in a two or four seat car, or a 2 seat boat. All of which need to be repaired. You can also find a fuse to repair the phone with. This allows you to call the police. Which appear at one of two spots on the map, and provide cover for a safe escape. On top of this, killing Jason is also possible as an Epic Win Condition, but requires an extremely competent team and a whole lot of luck.

This game is deep. There's a huge amount of things going on in the background at all times with how the various stats effect and impact the gameplay style of each Counselor. Playing with a team that has mics and understands the game mechanics is easily where this game shines. To be 100% honest, I haven't played a single round of Public Matches yet. So this has definitely impacted my feelings on the game positively. Keep that in mind.

Public matches as far as I understand are hectic and full of people that hardly know what to do. This may change as the game matures and more people learn the ropes. The game isn't as simple as some competitors. And Jason is a truly dominating force, as he should be. If Jason doesn't kill most of you in a match, you got incredibly lucky. Don't go into this expecting to, "git gud" and survive every game. You won't. There's only so much you can do to defend yourself from Jason Voorhees. No matter what, in the end, you'll get tired. And suddenly his slow march forward will seem a lot faster. That's when he gets you. He has a few abilities to lean on to do this. Morph is a long range low accuracy teleport. Sense lets him sense the fear of counselors, causing them to glow red. Managing your composure stat is huge as a counselor to avoid Sense. He also has Shift, a close range teleport more controllable by Jason. And finally Stalk. Which deactivates the warning music players hear when Jason is near, allowing him to ambush you. It also gives him super hearing, so he can hear you open drawers and walk around more clearly.

As a 5th, passive ability, Jason also has "Rage" mode. This fills over time and as Jason is attacked and takes damage. Once full, all his abilities have much shorter cooldowns, he becomes able to walk straight through barricaded doors and walls like wet tissue paper, and his sense ability is cranked up casting an invisible sense net as wide as almost the entire level. He'll find you once he's enraged more often than not.

The kills are delightfully gory and brutal, with some really great MoCap work on display from Mr. Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees in 4 films) himself reprising the role to really lend that extra level of authenticity. Escaping the onslaught always feels like an accomplishment, and it can be easy to fly off into a rage when you die. Adrenaline gets going and the heart starts pumping and a death at that point can be such a hard come down that people get salty as heck. Myself included at times. But you have to remember this is just the result of an adrenaline fueled match. And trust me, you'll get immersed and sucked in the more you play, the better people you meet to play with, and the more you learn of the game.

The music and sound direction are also incredibly authentic, with Harry Manfredini (composer for the F13 films and creator of the famous "Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma") himself lending his talents and music to the game world. All the sound effects are visceral and satisfying. With music spikes keeping things tense, and calm creepy ambient music playing when he's not nearby.

The graphics are also just wonderful. The lighting in particular stands out as a truly knock-out use of Unreal 4 as an engine. The lighting is atmospheric and eerie, and illuminates the players and world with a moody vibe that can't be ignored.

When the game is being played like games used to, in the old days, with friends, it's easily Game of the Year material for MP game of the year. Though it still has a Single Player component coming too this summer. When playing solo, it can be a bit of a drag and you're more likely to encounter griefers and trolls. As in any game. Thankfully there is no shortage of great online communities to find cool folks to play with.

Friday the 13th: The Game, not only does justice to the name Friday the 13th, but in this reviewers opinion, it elevates the brand of F13 itself. It makes Jason the scariest he's been since the early 80's. The screams and laughs and stories I've made up until now, already have justified my backing the game 10 times over, and while it is certainly not without bugs, the commitment I've seen from the devs to continue polishing the game eases my worst fears tremendously. The game is only gonna keep getting better.

As it stands now, this game is a 9/10 for me. Currently seated as my favorite game. Pulling me out of a 6 year hiatus from Multiplayer gaming entirely. If you're an old-school horror fan and a gamer, this is certainly the game for you. If that's not you, I still implore you to try this out. It's a genuinely great time.

UPDATE 12/28/2017

With the release of Single Player Bots and the new Vitual Cabin 2.0, I wanted to issue a short addendum to my review.

I am very happy to report that the Singplayer bots are super fun! They can be pretty stupid (as I think we all expected they are bots after all), but they've also left me surprised on more than one occasion. With the CoFounder of Gun Media Wes Keltner tweeting that they are far from final, and will continue to have their behavior improved in the coming updates. They don't often escape me. I've had maybe 3 escapes total out of 50 matches. And that was when I was purposfully not trapping the phone or car and ignoring kill check sound cues. For a newbie player it's a fantastic way to learn how to play as Jason, and for an experienced player, well, who doesn't like a little total destruction now and then? It's easy to get all the cool environmental kills and the bots occasionally even put up a decent resistance. They hide at extermely inopportune times and that ends up being silly, but with AI improvments coming I'm not bothered. Overall bots are fun, and that's what really matters.

I've also totally completed the new VC Through all the New Game + stages and seen the final scene. I loved it. I can't go into extreme detail here but The Odd Gentlemen (The company Gun contracted to work on the VC. It wasn't Illfonic that produced it they are still hard at work on the multipayer side of the game) did an incredible job making it. It was scary! And easily the best digital homage to the F13 franchise ever.

I still feel the same now as I did at launch. I love it. I've spent a lot of time with it. Enough to hit level 101. And I've really enjoyed the time spent. It absolutely has not been without bumps along the way but the game is the most stable it has ever been, and with more serious bugs eliminated every month, with a ton of free content vs. a couple cheap DLC packs, I'm satisfied with the direction the game has taken, and I hope to see it continuing this trend of improvment well into the rest of its lifespan.

A review Comparing DbD to Friday the 13th The Game. (Since these two fanbases butt heads a lot and draw comparisons constantly)

It's a solid experience, but Dead by Daylight just isn't scary to me. It feels too much like a video game and not enough like a horror movie. If that makes sense?

Like, I played DbD, and found it to be tense, but less in the fun way, more in the game-y way. I don't like how you have to hang people on hooks and a big monster comes from the sky. That all seems less scary and more silly to me. I don't enjoy that it feels like a game show, with an arena and clear exits that need power to open. I don't like the consumable items that carry between rounds. That also detracts from immersion for me. I wanna feel like I'm seriously being hunted. Friday the 13th The Game, even in Beta, accomplished that for me.

So for the kind of game I want, F13 just fits better. It's my style. I like slower, more methodical games, and DbD is far from that in my experience. I love how many different kills there are and how visceral it feels, and I adore the lighting in the game too. It just feels right to me.

So in my opinion, even though the beta was totally buggy, the core mechanics are so strong that it remained fun to play despite it's glitchiness. That instills a lot of confidence in me as a customer.

I just feel acutely aware that I'm playing a video game with DbD. I don't want to feel that way. I need to get pulled into the world.

However, all that said, DbD is still a solid game, and worth taking a look. I wouldn't say it's bad. That's why I still recommend it. Overall, while not my speed, I don't think it's a bad game. I can see what people love about it. It's just those same things they love, I am not so keen on. But that doesn't make this a bad product. Give it a try! See for yourself if you enjoy this approach to Asymetrical MP horror.
