The launcher does not work and there is no way to change the game settings without mods. Makes the game unplayable unless you are willing to mod.

Making people pay for a character map when they already purchased your season pass. This must be a joke....

Edit

The situation is somehow even worse, the solution was not to create a new and more expensive version of the season pass. Doesn't help that they completely botched season 2 either.

It's a really good game, held back by poor performance and a plethora of bugs. Might be best to hold off until fixed.

Edit: After playing the game more I realize my initial review was far too optimistic and there are many problems to the games core narrative and feature set.

Edit (2024): The game has been greatly improved over the years and is in a much better state. While the sting of the initial disappointment still lingers, I can confidently say CDPR did not abandon the game and have finally delivered on at least a few of the concepts initially promised.

As of writing only episodes 1 and 2 have been released

Short Version

An overall interesting, choice-driven, narrative-focused experience. Only worth an immediate purchase for returning fans of the franchise, for those who have not yet experienced the original masterpiece I urge you to first experience it and its sequel. It's probably best to wait till all episodes of Life is Strange 2 are released before purchasing, especially given the silly pricing structure adopted this time around.

Long Version

Following the story of the two Diaz brothers on their adventure to Mexico. The game starts off casual introducing us to the cast but then quickly escalates, as you soon find yourself having to make tough decisions. This game is much faster paced than the original and could very well be its downfall. Not enough time is spent developing characters that aren't Sean or Daniel (Main Characters), this might make future events less meaningful to the player which seems to already be the case with the events of the second episode. However, this does mean that the game is more successful at holding the interest of players during the first two episodes of the game than the original was, I just hope they delve more into the supporting cast and give us enough reason to return for the following episodes. The two main characters are portrayed very well and have excellent depth and personality, they have about as much built up as Max and Chloe did by episode 2 of the original game. The game like its predecessor is not afraid to tackle serious subject matters and has blatant displays of racism and stereotyping (although somewhat misplaced at times). Dontnod once more nailed the musical score, featuring a diverse list of engaging and immersive tracks that always suit the tone the game is trying to set. Thus far I have not come across any major technical faults with the game and can only criticize it for its inherent lack of native ultrawide support. The game performs well and is a big step up graphically for the Life is Strange franchise. Overall the game is good, and I hope it lives up to the story of Max and Chloe but that is no easy task and it still has a long way to go.

First impressions are good, the game itself is excellent and I am having a lot of fun with the story thus far. The graphics are astounding and make for one of the most immersive and expansive worlds I have yet to explore, great pacing and improved AI help further add to the immersion. Unfortunately, the much-improved visuals come at a cost, that is performance. Perfectly understandable given how metro has always pushed the boundaries of PC gaming graphics and is well worth it given how good the final product ends up looking. What is not acceptable however is a borderline dysfunctional and arbitrary graphics menu, giving us the option to only select between presets is ludicrous in 2019. This coupled with the fact the game does not run perfectly on every piece of hardware out there makes it difficult to find a reasonable compromise in frame rate and graphics. For example, my computer suffers from a lot of micro stutter and frame rate dips which could either be fixed by better optimization or allowing me to tone down one or two settings such as LOD to help stabilize the frame rate. Now I am not saying that it is an alternative to fixing the poor optimization, but it is an expected feature in today’s PC gaming landscape and is an obvious omission. Not to mention the absence of any antialiasing settings or the ability to turn off motion blur. The move to the exodus store was a real blow to the fan base and I do not support the move at all, and while not the developer’s fault they can still fix the problems I mention above. This game has so much potential, but I fear that too many people will have issues trying to run the game and just give up, further dwindling the already half extinguished player base. There isn’t much point in recommending this game on steam as it is not purchasable here at the time of writing, but if you are looking to get it over on the epic store and can overlook the shortcomings of the game and platform it is certainly worthwhile especially for returning fans.

Note

Despite the game’s requirements stating a maximum RAM requirement of 8GB, I experienced sub-optimal performance with many stutters when attempting to run the game with only that amount of RAM. After upgrading to dual channel 16GB memory the stutters were eradicated and the game became far more accessible.

Perhaps the best game in the franchise, this game marries a vast open world with an excellent and compelling story. There is always plenty to do and much to explore in this rich world and the ability to mod the game makes it that much more accessible and a timeless classic.
