A fascinating 2D Action RPG. Blocking like Kingdom Hearts. A sort of Secret of Mana combat evolution. “Bonfires” but they’re unintrusive. Fast snappy combat, that gets better as you unlock more and more stuff. Writing feels very SNES in the best way. Great pixel art and Sprites. Really cool 3D Camera moments. I AM SOLD. The world is colourful and beautiful. Cannot wait.

Man I really wanted to like this. And I like the soul of it it for sure. As advertising has promised, Duskfade wears the heart of its inspirations on its sleeve. However, unfortunately, such inspirations so blatantly obvious begs comparison. And I am left wanting as a result.

Our protagonist feels like he’s got two blocks of ice plastered to his feet. Jumping does not feel good because the degree of control you have over landing is severely limited. You can (usually) interrupt combos with the dodge roll (except when you cannot), and you cannot chain the spell equivalent in the middle of a combo. Combined with very noticeable end lag (even at the end of mid combo attacks), combat is much more of a slog, harkening more to 3D Platformers than Kingdom Hearts, but - enemies have ARPG levels of HP.

Narratively, the demo left a lot to be asked, and not in a “I am invested and want more” sense. Just in a “why does any of this matter?” sense? Some might say Kingdom Hearts starts the same way, however, the reverence Kingdom Hearts puts into every moment carries that initial dive to the heart. I hope this demo is not how the game starts, and it’s cut out our hero’s normal before the call to adventure. A fantasy world this different needs to teach itself to the player right away.

Speaking of teaching itself to the player. The game’s systems are not very clear at this point. I had almost 400 of the in-game currency before I knew for sure I was collecting it. This demo doesn’t make clear how much shopping will matter, nor how the game’s more RPG aspects, such as upgrades, will impact the player. Animations are still rough, and the gravitas of anything is sorely lacking.

I kept trying to redo the wall jumps, and it was a big bummer that these seem to only work in very special places. Especially considering how slippery the jumps are - ledges not being universally grabable also feels bad.

The demo’s boss introduction didn’t feel sufficiently epic. The umfph from the general fight was lacking, and ultimately it was more a platforming challenge than a fight. And the original Kingdom Hearts platforming feels more rewarding. I hope this game can be good, right now, it’s just, kinda OK.

Phenomenonally chill music that gets your heart in sync with the characters.

A rich vibrant world full of colours and a cast of bipoc people who are openly queer and varied.

Fresh and great voice acting.

A true master's understanding of panel-de-pon/tetras attack that feels truly nostalgic, with beautiful animations and snappy cursor control. Best of all, the game's spell mechanics truly evolve the genre into something new and exciting.

SoftNotWeek is a worker's coop so you know supporting them is truly supporting developers.

Best Kickstarter backing of my life. Buy this game.

I put 83 hours into the game, so overall I really like it! The Back half of the game's pacing is a little rough, once it becomes a bit more "open world" but these characters are fab and I love them all!

I did a "first hour" stream of this game when I first played it, and it was one of the funniest Rogue Likes I've ever played. The Writing is witty, there's a secret origin of a character from Boyfriend Dungeon, the systems are intuitive and lots to discover as you play more and more. V excited to play more!
