This game was a fun ride, but a disappointing remake. I had high hopes after playing RE2R and all that hope was squashed to bits about halfway through the game when I realized what they had done. While RE2 was a great example at how to do a remake, I honestly believe this one is a great example at how NOT to do a remake.

To begin, the complaint from myself and most other people: cut content. This should be a MAJOR sin for any "remake". When remaking something, you shouldn't be cutting stuff so it "is more realistic" or "flows better" (or whatever excuse they'd try to give), you should be EXPANDING on those things--trying to make them fit into the game's narrative better. The original had MORE content than the remake. Without a time machine, I don't even see how they could make that possible, but they did.
The clock tower, park, and dead factory being cut is (imo) equivalent to the courtyard, guest house, and caves being cut from RE1, the island being cut from RE4, or the antarctic base being cut from RE:CV. Which makes me terrified to see what they would do to those if they remade them in this fashion.
(Oh! The game also teases you at the beginning telling you that there's a clock tower and a park. I was extremely excited to go to those places and it feels like the game slaps you into submission when all you get to see is the clock tower's exterior.)

Second: game length. I guess this one kinda just ties into cut content, but this is really sad. I know people say the game being 4-6 hours long isn't that bad, but come on... it's a $60 game with linear "set-piece" gameplay. I tried my absolute hardest to pad out the game with exploration and sight-viewing (and playing on Hardcore), and I still clocked in at about 5 1/2 hours. That is just... sad. Resident Evil games can usually be sped-run very quickly, but it's the EXPLORATION and puzzle-solving that makes them longer games.

Third: Nemesis... About halfway through the game, I had almost forgotten this game was mainly about Jill being hunted by Nemesis. They end up ditching his Tyrant-like look for a... dog? I do like that they tried to add another phase to the Nemesis transformation, I just REALLY wish it didn't happen so quick. A 1v1 fight with classic phase 2 Nemesis in the clock tower courtyard would've been PERFECT with the new dodging mechanic.

Now, that being said, where the game DID deliver is its soundtrack, which I believe was a step up from RE2R soundtrack. The entire soundtrack seems to be remixed/rearranged versions of the classic soundtrack. RE2R tried to remove that for more ambient sounds, while RE3R tried to keep that classic feel with the music. The final boss music was BEAUTIFUL and gave me chills the moment I heard it kick in.

The characterization is also very nice. I enjoyed the interactions with Jill and Carlos, and all the other characters felt a tad bit more fleshed out. I just wish some of them had more on-screen time (mainly Dario and Brad).

In general, I'd give this game about a 5/10 in terms of being a remake, and an 8/10 as a game. However, I definitely cannot recommend it at the current price unless someone REALLY wants to play Resistance (which is actually a lot of fun imo).

I'm hoping Capcom gives RE3R a look over and adds some things (I doubt it), or at least learns from a few of these mistakes for future remakes.
