Higher gas/oil costs are a manufactured con.
Iran is the 3rd-largest natural gas producer in the world (after the US and Russia)
Production is roughly 260–276 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year
In global terms:
• That’s ~6–7% of total world gas production (approximate share based on global totals);
• Iran also holds the 2nd-largest gas reserves globally
But here’s the twist:
• Iran does NOT export much of its gas.
• About 90–95% of its gas is used domestically (power, heating, industry)
This is due to:
• Heavy domestic demand.
• Subsidised energy prices.
• Sanctions limiting export infrastructure (especially LNG)
How much gas does Iran export?
"Around 9 bcm exported in 2024"
(Tehran Times)
Compare that globally:
• Global gas trade = hundreds of bcm
• Iran’s share = well under 2% of global gas trade
Main buyers:
• Turkey;
• Iraq;
• Armenia;
• Azerbaijan;
• Turkmenistan
