Sony kneecapping a good game is par for the course. Nobody likes account linking, nobody wants more accounts to sign into. It even effectively region locks other players who CANT make a PSN account out of the game THEY paid for. ♥♥♥♥ Sony and ♥♥♥♥ PSN

Edit: Major Operation Successful. ♥♥♥♥ Sony, Democracy Prevails

Early Access Review
be me, play Abby, pick smgs. Get fusillade, kill switch, lightning bolts, whirlwind and triple ammo curse. Right click. Spin to win

hour later. Be diamond, have shotgun. Half health with rune. Heal with fire, Big bullets. Take damage + bullets get bigger. Take damage, Heal. Bullets bigger than character model. Take damage + heal some more. Bullets bigger than enemies. Do it AGAIN. Bullets are my screen.

10/10 would spend 2.50 again

I picked this up in early access and returned when it hit full release. It definitely delivers on a solid roguelike experience and has a fantastic style and feel to it. I really do love the sprite work in this game and it has an enjoyable little story to go along with it.

The movement in this game is phenomenal and being able to cancel attack animations with dashes and jumps gives this game great momentum. The skulls offer a wide variety of combinations and play styles. Each type of skull has different strengths and weaknesses which can be amplified or mitigated with items. Anything below a legendary skull can be upgraded to that rarity which offers progression for low level skull you have grown attached to while playing. The items in this game have interesting synergies which can see you create a variety of combinations or even change an entire play style during your run.

Having completed my first full run with a fully upgraded common to legendary skull and an immediate legendary one, i can say that there is some disparity in power levels, some skulls feel very strong right away while others take some building up to via item combinations or upgrades. That being said it's not impossible for the most basic of skulls to be effective with the right item and synergies.

There are a few minor downsides, but nothing big enough that has stopped me sinking 34 hours into the game at the time of this review. There are a few occasions where you may fill the screen with your abilities and explosions from enemies and items so you could lose track of your location. It's not a big deal as you can use your movement to disengage from the brawl and find yourself again.

Overall my only want from this game as of now is some different attack animations for common skulls that have been upgraded multiple times. Other than that i look forward to any and all updates the game receives. It's definitely worth the price tag for anyone who enjoys a challenging and brawly rogue like.

The areas and total stages are far too short and bizarrely paced with some areas dragging on and others being over before you know it.

There are too few movement options to chase down retreating enemies which often means your approach is heavily limited and leaves you open to stray hits.

There is no combo breaker, I found myself mashing the "defensive" special only to find you can only do it once ALL stun frames are over which by that point you have eaten the chunk of damage you wanted to avoid.

The characters are weirdly balanced creating the choice of "do you want effective moves?" or "do you wanna play your favourite character?". Despite playing Axel throughout all of SoR I found myself picking Adam over him because he had the only dash and a larger effective range compared to Axel, making the gameplay a bit more tolerable when you lack so much movement. The older versions of the characters such as SoR3 Axel do not suffer from this problem but require an absolute grind to unlock them via a lifetime score bar.

There are high resolution variants of a few playable characters yet they are inaccessible for seemingly no reason. Why are they in the game yet not playable on release?

Several enemies gain invulnerability frames on wake up seemingly at random leading to stray hits that kill your combo score unless you sit back and wait for them to get up, disrupting the pacing which is already far too slow. The Bikers and Beanie guys were some of the more common offenders.

It's not all bad, I really enjoyed the art style, a lot of the effects were visually pleasing and the music at times was pretty good but overall there are other beat em ups around that are better and cheaper while maintaining a modern feel to the classic format. This may be subject to change if at least some of the issues (particularly movement) are addressed.
