An instant cult classic imo, especially with how hard it got panned on release. While the story is campy and over-the-top, it also becomes very sincere and emotional, and is a great prequel to Final Fantasy I.

Mechanically, it plays similarly to a Nioh game with a huge list of Job options that give passives and a specialized active skill. The game feels pretty fleshed out and through the story mode you get quite a lot of options to play with classes and builds. Post-game, however, the options and things to do explode, with extra story missions, tons of unlockables and mastery levels and extra classes that really enable you to experiment, make builds, remake them, and min-max to your heart's content, along with an optional Super Mode to toggle for any mission aside from the infinite dungeon and its leaderboard.

Easily my underdog game of the year and my favorite Final Fantasy game in at least a decade; definitely recommended if you're into Final Fantasy and enjoy action games and especially build crafting

While playing, my FPS suffered a sudden drop and I found the issue: One of my dwarves, while trying to pick fruit from a tree, had become possessed by otherworldly spirits and couldn't figure out how to get out of a tree to work out his obsession. Upon noticing the screaming and laughing coming from the branches, I set to work tasking dwarves to cut down the tree in hopes of saving him from permanent possession and madness. Unfortunately, my only competent woodcutter was on work strike and spending all his time boozing, praying, or fraternizing with the elves and thus refused to do the job. As a last resort, I assigned another worker the sole duty to cut down the tree, but by the time the dwarf was rescued, he was in full possession of the spirits and he immediately ran, babbling and giggling, to the rim of the local volcano where he threw himself in, presumably appeasing the restless spirits. 10/10

I mind-dominated a cat, taught it to use a chaingun, made it fall in love with me, and watched as it mowed my enemies down from afar.

10/10 this game is amazing
