Sony has reverted this change. This is a great game, and especially fun with friends. However, do note that the publisher has done, and will probably, keep doing sketchy ♥♥♥♥.

Forcing players to create and link a PSN account 3 months after release is stupid. If we played for 3 months without it and the game was fine, there is no use in linking one.

Whether you're looking for a laid back survival experience with friends, or an absolute horror story of running away from a crowd of hundreds - Project Zomboid covers anything and everything in the survival-horror genre. It's an amazing game, and even though the game is over a decade old now, it still feels as fresh as ever. I absolutely recommend this game to anyone interested in picking up, but it's a must-by if you're interested in it all and it's on sale.
