Couple things you should know about this game, but before i say any of that I will say that this is a *good* game, no matter how you decide to play it, through emulation or through Rehydrated, or even on your old consoles, this game is seriously great. Spongebob theming aside, this is an excellent 3D platformer with Super Mario-esque worlds and gameplay objectives. Play it.

This port though? Hit or miss on almost every aspect. I'll touch on a couple reasons why this falls through in the long run. One big thing? You wanna know the reason why you don't slap unreal engine/default unity grass into every 3D platformer to make it look "good"? Because you need to be able to see your own shadow for precise jumping and positioning. Im not saying this game is kaizo, but you should be able to see your shadow when jumping on some of these platforms. Not every level has this obnoxious grass everywhere, in fact only a couple do, but even in the upper levels of Jellyfish fields? You need to be able to make some of those jumps. They try to use some weird backface culling to put the shadow on top of whatever shading layer they used for the grass but it just doesnt work. Speaking of backface culling, could you guys just not get the normals right on those underpants models? Really? Lmao.

Controls are pretty tight, but they should be. Spongebob should control like butter if you're gonna slap him in a 3D platformer like BFBB. But they made him *slow*. Like, really slow. I don't mean movement speed, I'm pretty sure that's true to the original, but his animation speed, some of the ways he reacts to the environment, they all play out like they're in molasses. It really contrasts to the original, where most things were tight and snappy. Also, hit collision, what? Why is it that sometimes when you swing once, you'll hit things for two to three times with no additional input? Why is it that sometimes your character's hitbox will remain on the ground while you're in the air? Bugs? Not too sure. Watch yourselves.

Sound is pretty.. Well, they didn't change *too* much. I guess in 15 years we couldn't figure out how to loop a song any better, though. I mean, I like all the music, but hearing it fade in and out while it loops every time is annoying. I'm pretty sure the original suffered from this too, but again, it's been more than a decade. A lot of the voice clips remain the same, with some really bad impersonators or voice actors way too out of their touch filling in for some new lines, which are.. just awful. just terrible. the "new" ""writing"" is horrible. some of the voice actors you could find better on fiverr.

since that covers most of the game's issues or differences from the originals im gonna write a paragraph to nitpick too. no graphics settings? i mean that's fine but make sure your game runs well universally, which it doesn't. I'm lucky in that my rig can support 144 throughout the entire game at 1080/2k just fine but even with my specs the game can chug at 4k and I know some friends who had issues at 1080p. the performance is pretty good actually, not a whole lot of stuttering or frame pacing like you'll get from a lot of ports and remasters. solid performance, but that's just to be expected. a couple other small things worth mentioning is the menus are all super boring now. go look at the old game's UI and compare it to this one, just lacks so much soul. in the original, hearing the "shiny objects" collection noise was so nice and they would change the pitch to scale it with the amount you'd collect, now it's super jarring just to collect one or two here or there with no real variation. these small things are the components that made the original game so much more than this remaster, and i'm really sad they never capitalized on these details, it shows that the prerogative now is just that much more different than the philosophies this game was created on.

also a fish dabs.

7.5/10 def recommend the original but play this too

this is the absolute best port of a popular game i've seen in a very, very long time
it's rare you see a game with DRM have no frame pacing issues or memory leaks or what have you but this game runs so perfectly even at the higher refresh rates, only capping itself for very specific cutscene material or certain dialogue where the game would have to process at a lower framerate anyway for whatever's going on in the scene. the fact that this is a perfect port and the best persona game atlus has made means there is literally 0 reason for you to not own this already and not already burnt your copy of persona 5 "royal" in the trash fire it came from

play a *real* persona game
