Took work off and ruined my sleep schedule release night and the following day. Worth every penny and every minute, required playing for every RE fan from any era of the franchise.

You start the climb as friends, but you can't always end the climb as friends...

Early Access Review
This game is a blast if you play it with a friend group! Highly HIGHLY recommend to anyone with 3 or more friends willing to learn some rules and give it a chance.
My advice: treat it like you would a board game. Give yourselves a first game or two to learn the rules and acclimate everybody to the same wavelength in your group. If you get the vibes right, I promise this is some of the most fun you can have, ESPECIALLY for the price. And on sale? Even better man.

I have such high hopes for the future of this game. Fix a few weird bugs, fine tune a few mechanics to be a little more intuitive, stuff like that. I truly love this game and will recommend it to anybody who has a few friends with the patience to figure it all out!

My settings advice for friends-only games (as of 7/6/25)
Disable playable enemies: On (if you get infected and spawn as an enemie, you are DISABLED from spawning as humans again. Not worth currently in my groups opinion since infected players DO NOT get respawns as more enemies, and will spend the rest of the game spectating after their first monster life)
Classified Minimum Difficulty: Easy (For some reason that I hope changes in the future, classified difficulty also is also directly tied to reinforcement budget. At easy, it gives 8 reinforce tokens, normal is 6, hard is 4, and nightmare is 2. Since respawning is already only allowed at computer monitors, me and my friends decided to honor rule and not call extract without 6 or more classified being found, since this gives us more respawns total to make sure its less likely anybody gets left out and has to spend more time spectating.)
Nuke Timer: Nightmare (this one is definitely the most subjective, but we found the pace to be really good at this setting, although groups of 2-3 people would probably prefer putting it down by 1, since we normally play with around 5)

Anyways, I love this game and it DEFINITELY has some fine tuning to be done because it does feel a little harder to get into than it needs to be. Despite that, it's still some of the most fun with my friends I've had in a game in forever. HIGHLY recommend to any friend groups willing to play a game that requires a bit of patience to get into, but is SO worth it if you can find the right energy.

yeah, we're not like your typical modern fps games. we have a probably unnecessary sequel replacing the first game, a free to play system, an expensive cosmetic store, and a battle royale gamemode.

oh.

THE GAMEPLAY IS PRETTY FUN THOUGH AND I DO ENJOY PLAYING. I WISH I COULD GIVE A NEUTRAL REVIEW, THAT DISPLAY AT SUMMER GAME FEST HAD ME CRINGING WHO LET HIM ON STAGE IN THAT HAT WITH THAT SCRIPT DUDE LOL

TLDR: If you think you'd enjoy a map with a unique spin on the more survivalist parts of DayZ, that also has more of an emphasis on player encounters than some other maps, this is 100% worth the buy. I'd recommend to any DayZ player just for the change of pace. Even if it's not your main way to play, I think everyone can enjoy this as an option to throw on for something different.

This map has a certain flow to it that gets me invested in the most "DayZ" way possible. Managing your heat with fires, torches, heat packs, and even items you warm up and store in your pockets is a really fun way to keep the survival vibe throughout the entire experience. Finding warmer clothes with higher insulation is a great feeling of progression, and keeping those clothes in good condition is more important than ever. Having to choose between clothes with better insulation and clothes with more protection in a firefight is also a fun way to have a less strictly linear path for better equipment. Heavy metal poisoning is honestly really easy to avoid, but I like it's inclusion as a way to give water everywhere with the snow, but only for people capable of getting medicine or proper filters. Once you get to the southern most parts of the map where the good military gear spawns, there are NO natural water sources anywhere other than the snow, so if you stay there for extended periods of time, these things can really change how you have to play. Personally, I find all of these things really quirky and entertaining, but I could see someone missing the relative ease of survival on other maps after awhile. This map will require you to interact with the survival and crafting systems way more than the other base game maps, and if you don't take the time to learn, you probably won't be making it far.

The structure of the map is really well done. The most important thing of note, you'll end up with interesting player encounters more often than you do on other official maps. If you like running into other players, especially in that mid game/tier 2 level of loot, you get a lot of it on this map. Learning to travel by small roads, power lines, or landmarks into the mountains and find military set ups is very fun and rewarding, and personally I think the weather forcing you to manage your heat more as you travel up into the mountains is really fun and makes player encounters up there even more interesting. Harder to camp forever when you'll eventually start freezing to death y'know. The southern part of the map is maybe a lil less interesting to me honestly, its basically either barren wilderness or military base, not a lot of variety after a certain point. The way you GET to the southern military bases is cool as hell though. Either crossing a relatively narrow land bridge on your way there, finding a boat and taking it across the sea, or, my personal favorite, crossing across the floating ice and making the cold, wet, journey to get across before you start freezing to death. The journey to these military bases, plus the lack of reliable water or food down there, makes it a pretty interesting zone of the map where the focus is typically to get in, get cool loot, and get back to the mainland in one piece. I dig it, even if the military bases feel a *lil* bland. Lots of points on this map have become fast favorites of mine, and I think most players will end up feeling that way after awhile.
