I'll say this right up front - this is the first Metal Gear game that I played. As such, I can't compare this to older games in the series, but I can tell you this; it is an amazing game. The soundtrack, the gameplay mechanics, the open world, they're all just perfect. The story starts out strong as well, but the ending lacks finality, and it seems rushed. This review will delve into some technical aspects of the game, then cover the game's story, soundtrack, etc.

21:9 Support

Right out of the box the game does not fully support 21:9, but there is a fix to get it working. It involves editing some .ini files, and then the game will show more on the sides of the screen correctly. The only problem left to fix after this is the markers; the 21:9 fix breaks them. In order to fix them, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke6d8AOXmKg

After all the fixes, the game will work perfectly at 21:9 (Cutscenes, gameplay, and even aiming down sights).

Frame Rate Lock

The game has a set frame rate limit of 60 FPS, but there is a fix to remove this. Joker Productions made a video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ304NoyJTA

After the fix, the game will have an uncapped frame rate, and from what I can tell, it doesn't break the game.

Performance

I have a GTX 970M, an i7 - 4710HQ, and 16 GB of RAM. I'm running the game at 2560 x 1080, with all graphics at high or ultra. That being said, I'm above 60 FPS at almost all moments, sometimes dipping into the mid-to-high 40's, but quickly jumping back up. That being said, I understand that the 970M is still a pretty powerful card, so I did some searching. LowSpecGamer has a good video in which he's able to get the game running in a build with Intel HD Graphics 4000, an i5-3317U, and 4 GB of RAM. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9z0qQctnXE

All in all, the performance is impressive, and thanks to LowSpecGamer's fixes, anyone can enjoy the game.

Story

The story starts out strong right from the get-go, albeit confusing. After all, it is a Metal Gear Solid game, and the story is never simple. Near the last few missions, however, it's obvious that the game was rushed and the story feels lacking. The ending was not sufficient, and you can pinpoint the exact time when Kojima left Konami; the story really does become that bad. That being said, it's only the last few missions, and there are plenty of memorable experiences throughout the course of the game. Overall, it's a great tale.

Gameplay

This is where the game really sets itself apart from others. There is a saying that's used often when revealing a new open world game; "You can approach the mission any way you want". This isn't always the case, however, and few games actually manage to give you the freedom to approach a mission in a variety of ways. This is one of those games. The game promotes player ingenuity, rewards them for being tactical, employing new strategies that just wouldn't work in other games. Or, you can go guns blazing into an enemy stronghold and complete the mission that way. Really, the possibilities are endless. The only problem is the side quests - they're short, unoriginal, and not even close to being as good as the story quests. I'm the type of person who enjoys doing every quest possible, but I just couldn't bring myself to do the side quests in this game.

Graphics

This game takes place in Afghanistan and Africa, and as such, you will traverse deserts and lush forests. The graphics aren't anything groundbreaking, but they aren't terrible either. Think of it this way - the graphics are just good enough to get you immersed in the world.

Soundtrack

This is one of the better aspects of the game. You can find cassette tapes lying around the world, and listen to 80's music as you explore the world. The music during cutscenes adds to the depth and immersion, making you feel as though you're in an action movie.

Conclusion

Overall, the game checks all the right boxes. If you're a 21:9 gamer with a 166 Hz monitor like I am, you'll need to do a bit of tinkering to get the best experience, but it's worth it. To end off, it's a really good game, and I'd highly recommend it.

Game keeps crashing everytime I try to play. The same thing happened with Infinite Warfare. The performance is absolutely horrible, one second I'm in the high 70s and then suddenly I'm at 23. Makes no sense.

"This game is a narrative experience that does not hold your hand." That's the first thing that you see in this game, and frankly, it's the game's undoing. The game started out strong, and had an interesting concept. You play as a detective investigating the dissapearance of this kid named Ethan Carter after he reaches out to you for help. It started out good enough, with me solving the railroad murder fairly quickly, just giving me a glimpse of what the game had to offer. The graphics were breathtaking, and the game ran like a charm. I followed all the "hints" left by the developer in order to get to the end of the game, only for the only door in the scene to still be locked. A quick online search revealed that I had actually missed 3 of the game's "scenes", and I had to go back and solve them if I wanted to finish the game. See, if the game had let me end the game right then and there, I wouldn't have had an issue, and would have rated it 8/10 or so.

The first scene I missed takes place behind where your character spawns at the beginning of the game. Really, behind! Nobody is going to spawn into this game, and think that the first place that they have to go is behind them, and not follow the railroad track so clearly marked in front of them. Thing is, this scene was meant to be the tutorial, yet the developers didn't make it optional, meaning that I had to slog all the way back to the beginning of the game in order to beat it.

The second and third scenes just emphasized how bad the game design in this game is. After solving the murder scene at the train tracks, I picked up on a hint that told be to go to location A. At location A, I picked up on a hint to go to location B, then C, and so on. Any new player who spawns into the game would think that they were going the right way, that the developers meant for them to follow this path. Yet, halfway between A and B, there would be a scene of to side, off of the walking path that you had been following. Honestly, nobody is actually going to go there, because they wouldn't expect anything to be there! It's just bad game design all around.

When a game says that they won't hold your hand, you still have to impose some restrictions. Don't let them get to the end of the game, and not be able to finish. If your game is really a good game, the players shouldn't have to look up a guide in order to finish it. The developers tried to do something new, stray away from the gaming conventions we know and love. While originality is new, there's a reason why we still have those conventions, and the devs failed to realize that.

I livestreamed my whole playthrough of the game, you can see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH_9dyU0UO4

I went into this game thinking it would be a chilling horror game for the ages. After playing 3 and a half hours (I logged in some extra time for the cards), I can say that this game is not that. The game started out strong, the story's premise was intruiging, and there were some good jumpscares here and there. However, it quickly went downhill, and the game soon felt repetetive, with the developer trying a little too hard to scare you. As a result, the game actually felt kind of dull, uninteresting, and most importantly, it wasn't able to create a scary atmosphere. It was just....boring.

You can see what I mean in my "playthrough" of the first three hours or so of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCKO5Qu7QuE
