***UPDATE 4/2022***
I was initially very down on Evil Genius 2 (see bottom of this review for what I originally wrote). However, the devs have made a large amount of smart UX changes that reduce a *lot* of the overhead existing in the initial release. I still don't love a lot of the conscious changes from the first game but now when I play it feels like an intentional twist rather than throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.

The DLC content has been fine; it has added enough little twists on the gameplay that I don't regret my season pass purchase but I would recommend buying the base game alone first.

All-in-all, I've moved into the Recommend column. But probably wait for a sale if you're hesitant.


***ORIGINAL 4/2021***
One of my biggest disappointments of the last few years. Evil Genius is in my opinion one of the most underrated games of all time and I was incredibly excited for the sequel 17 years later. While the original was great, it definitely had some flaws that a new game could easily address. Unfortunately, while the art direction remains top-notch, most of the conscious changes the developers made were bad. Despite being a sequel, the game feels more simple and more confusing than the original which is very strange. Add on a truly poor UX experience and you get... this.

Evil Genius is one of those unique games from the past that absolutely hold up today. I strongly recommend playing EG1 over EG2 and will be launching it right after I post this review.

Fantastic soundtrack, well-written characters, interesting story, love the chat system. Great adventure game.

Some kinks in the game and obviously the graphics are old news but man, this game still fully holds up. One of those uncommon older games that are good even without the nostalgia factor.

Awesome game that I spent 16 hours in 2 days playing. Persona mixed with Battle Royale. Don't read anything about the game because you will be spoiled and it will ruin the experience.
