For being such an old game with a fairly scuffed development process, Alan Wake holds up pretty well. The gameplay is a very straightforward action shooter loop with tight and responsive gunplay, but adding the requirement of using light to tear away the enemies armor before dealing damage adds a fun twist that keeps each fight fresh and interesting despite the limited enemy types. The writing is the real highlight of the game, and what I'd say is the biggest reason to play it. The story is fun and inventive without trying to do to much, striking a good balance between substance and its pulp science-fiction style. The characters cover a nice array of personalities, written and acted in a realistic and endearing way that seamlessly meshes with the story and its world.

While overall a very good game, it still has two problems that stood out, but luckily none of note beyond that. The first and biggest is its graphics, which are pretty good in the port but recognizably dated, and was a source of some pretty intense vertigo for me during the last mission, a sensation I'm usually very resistant to. In areas controlled by the main villain, a pulsing, grainy, dark fog covers the environment, and in open spaces with few objects to help me establish a proper sense of depth to counter its subtle movement I did start experiencing vertigo. Luckily this wasn't an issue for me 95% of the time, as most environments where the fog is present are very filled in, and I only took maybe two or three couple minute breaks for the 45 minutes of actual time the mission took, but it's still worth considering if that's a personal concern for you.

The only other notable problem I had was the way a "quick turn" mechanic was adapted from controller to mouse and keyboard, which was what I used. If you move your cursor for long enough while turning, the sensitivity will suddenly jump up, allowing you to whip your camera around to face enemies in your blind spots. This game does take inspiration from the survival horror genre, and for how compact the environments are and how quickly you can die, I understand why this was put in the game, especially since it was originally intended to be played on controller which lacks the same sensitivity control mouse offers. However when this did happen it tore the screen and hurt my eyes so bad that I had to pause and close them for a few seconds. I didn't find an option to change this in the settings menu, so I had to counter it by turning my sensitivity way down and being very mindful of how quickly I was turning. Luckily I didn't have any problems with this mechanic after adopting that strategy, but it's still an issue worth noting.

I really suggest this game. Its design is simple and straightforward, with entertaining writing and well crafted ambience. It feels much more like watching a good crime show or movie than playing a game, only lasts about 12 hours in total for the main story, and I've seen it go on sale for very cheap. I'll also take this time to plug its sequel, Alan Wake 2, which while only available on Epic's game store is a phenomenal game that goes heavy into the mystery and horror aspect of the setting, multiplying the quality of every part of this game many times over. I had a good time with this game, but I'm having an incredible time with its sequel. (Alan Wake's American Nightmare doesn't really count as it's more like a very high quality, but nonmandatory DLC, and I don't suggest it as much as the other two games in the franchise. Although it can be worth the afternoon it takes to complete if you just want more of what this game offers. Definitely make sure to buy it on sale though.)

I played this game for a bit over an hour and I understand why DICE locked in so hard for Battlefield 6 because this is genuinely somehow not worth it even at $3.
Maps are awfully designed, being way too big, almost entirely empty of cover anywhere but the points, and with each area of action so far apart from each other you end up spending half the game just running around looking for people.
Everybody dies in a quarter second so you can mow through people brainlessly without any interesting challenge, then die out of nowhere with little to no time to react, then hope you have somebody to spawn on near the action or you have to spend multiple minutes running back.
Every gun I tried felt like they fired the same and had the same recoil pattern, giving them no personality and making the gun play uninteresting.
The lighting is terrible, colors are muddy and shapes blend together even at max settings so you can barely tell things apart.
The amount of different operators is overwhelming to try and parse through and some of them just seem terrible in comparison.
Overall it feels like they tried to make this game mechanically like a CoD style arena shooter but in a Battlefield design frame and it does not work.

Easily the best fighting game on the market right now and it's not even close.

Well designed and interesting characters that cover a broad array of play styles and visual designs.

Gameplay that's addicting and rewarding if you want to take it seriously as a fighting game.

Game systems that are easy to understand and begin using, but reward study and creative application, allowing for tons of possible depth.

A full in-depth set of tutorials for properly teaching new players starting from zero fighting game knowledge, and a suite of detailed, top of the genre training tools to support them or experienced players in becoming experts at the game.

Most importantly, really well done casual modes including a fun although basic full open world story that gives you a free costume for each character just for completing their missions, alongside an online lounge where you can take your custom fighter from the story and use it to fight other people's custom fighters, play casual matches using your roster characters, or play old arcade games. All of this is on top of the regular fighting game casual modes like the arcade side stories and challenge modes.

If you want a fighting game to take anywhere from super competitively, to super casually, seriously, this is the one for you.

Despite being one of the best fighting games on the market, with a wide varying and interesting roster with very newbie friendly gameplay but a depth that'll keep high level players invested, the online of this game is such an uncared for dumpster fire at all levels that it's really not worth investing in, unless you have the availability to play offline or other people to run pretty regular online lobby matches. Capcom has put almost zero effort into fixing the netcode in the four years the game has existed, leaving it a constantly stuttery, input delay ridden, barely functioning mess. The amount of mental strength it takes to not go crazy in anger when a pressed button is simply eaten by the game over and over and over again is so high that it can break even people who have been grinding intensely since year 0, as it has many of my friends. I wouldn't say don't support this game, offline it plays like one of the most finely crafted machines, and Capcom keeps coming up with great content updates (If a bit irregularly released), but unless you have easy means to play outside of casual or ranked matchmaking, I'd suggest putting some serious thinking into whether you really want to invest time, energy and money into playing this game.

I have this game on the PS4, and let me tell you, there are some incredibly glaring differences between the two versions, none of them good. While I love playing this game, and have put in probably somewhere close over three hundred hours between the two systems, the PC port is just awful. While the netcode is pretty decent (all the matches I've played no matter what connection always stayed at about that connection thankfully), the servers that run this game deserve some TLC, since most of the players that you're going to be offered to play run at about a two bar connection, (you don't want to play those BTW, even though it ends up increasing the amount of time spent in queue), and I don't ever remember seeing anything above a three bar. The experience in any online match is also pretty sus, while they have ironed out some of the desync issues, and I get less eaten inputs than ps4, for some reason the game just doesn't want to accept quarter circle inputs outside of being used in a buffer, overall is slower to read inputs and is generally later to receive updates. Hopefully in the future they can fix the little stuff and I can come back and change my review, but for the moment I'd suggest staying away from this game.
