So during the most recent Steam sale, I did what I normally do and I peruse the Indie games in the hopes to find hidden gems at a rock bottom price. Mission Accomplished. I don't know if it was the fact that I can relate to a lot of the main character's life events or the fact that I was just recently married and really feel a connection to the game's story, but boy did this game hit me hard. I've been playing video games since 1990 and while I've certainly be emotionally impacted by games over the years, I have never, ever felt...this. I can't even begin to explain it.

Sure I was saddened by games, shocked by games, and even emotionally stunned by games, but I had never cried or have reverted to such an emotional state as I did throughout this title. I'm not an overly emotionally guy. In fact, my nickname used to be "the tin-man" because I was seemingly never emotional about anything. Then I met my wife and my life changed forever and not to get completely sappy, but I certainly became much more emotional as I became more in touch and more comfortable with my feelings. This game has had the same effect on me, forcing me to re-acknowledge the important things in life. How many games can do that?

In the game two doctors have a unique opportunity to help their patients relive their lives and live their dreams. However, because this procedure takes a toll on the individuals fragile mind, it can only be performed upon one's death bed. In this case, the patient wanted to go to the moon, even though he never really understood why. Soon after, what was seemingly a standard job expands into a story about a man's journey through life, as seen through his memories. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned this life, they seek to find out just why this frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

If you're looking for the next best shooter or RPG, this is NOT the game for you. If you are looking for a game that forgoes the latest in graphical advancement and returns to a time of more simplistic game play in order to fully support it's story, than buy this game...now. The art direction is whimsical, the music is charming, and the story is breath taking. This game is not hampered by a genre, nor is it confined by any sort of real structure. It is simply a story that is told through one of our favorite mediums and one that I cannot wait to relive over and over.

I cannot tout this game enough. This is the type of achievement that makes indie games special and worthy of investing our time and money.

Quick and Snobby Review: Deadlight (PC)

So, on a whim, I decided to download Deadlight because it was on sale via Steam. All I can say is wow! Great atmosphere, intriguing storyline, great visual (very Limbo-esque), and great blend of several game play types. Even when you finally get weapons, you'll want to use your know how and lure enemies into traps and avoid confrontations. This game is about survival, not kill counts.

This game has puzzles, to action, to platforming, all set in a metroidvania style side scrolling motif, and boy is it fantastic. There is no overall map and you don't get a ton of items, but the fixed camera is there and some areas really open up.

Deadlight was originally an XBLA game and was ported to PC without any major hiccups (some slowdown during loading sequences that should not happen on even a moderate PC, but would on a console, for example). The keyboard controls could have been tweaked a little more, but overall a great experience at a great price.

I would give it a solid 8/10...
Pros: Visuals, Varied Blend of Gameplay, Intriguing Story
Cons: Wonky Controls (Occasionally), Performance Issues (Loading)
