A Hollow Shell of What Painkiller Used to Be

I’ve played the old Painkiller games, and this new one feels like a hollow shell of what those games tried to be.
Where the originals focused on a bloody, fast-paced campaign filled with gore, tons of weapons, and just enough story to keep things moving - this one feels like all that soul has been replaced by an attempt to make an online Warhammer: Vermintide clone. Unfortunately, it falls flat even compared to that.

The game feels like it’s having an identity crisis. You’re limited to only two weapons instead of carrying an arsenal, and there’s an unnecessary grind clearly added just to stretch playtime. There are only three biomes, each with three maps. My first map took me about 29 minutes to complete, so I can roughly guess there’s around 4½ hours of total gameplay if you only play through the empty “campaign.”

To make things worse, I earned 2,900 gold from that first map. Each weapon costs 6,000 gold to unlock, and cards cost 3,000 gold each - and they’re consumed when used. That means even after completing all maps once, I still wouldn’t have unlocked all the weapons, and that’s without upgrading or buying cards.

Overall, I’m deeply disappointed. This game doesn’t live up to what Painkiller used to be. Honestly, I’d say it’s worth no more than $15, and only if you buy it with lowered expectations and a decent discount.

I liked it. Played the campaign on legendary with a friend and had a blast.

I honestly didn't enjoy the game when I first played it. Mouse felt weird and game just felt kinda off.. Then tried it here a couple of weeks ago and damn I have been missing out. The game feels so much more polished now and the mouse problem got solved cause I actually gave myself the time to search the forums for a solution! So all in all I would recommend this game! :-)

Best franchise of all time and now it's on steam! This is a masterpiece!
