I'm gonna start this off by saying the obvious: This is a port of a game originally designed for Apple Arcade, and thus, is technically a mobile game. This explains a few things, but overall I would say this game's 2.0 patch (released at launch) polishes the game enough to make it worthwhile. Now to the actual review.

At a base level, this game is...satisfactory. I personally really enjoy it, but it took around 4 hours to get "into" the game.

When you get introduced to the game, you are told about how this game is functionally different from NtG. It's a side-view game rather than top down, and instead of being a dungeon crawler, the entire game is a "Survive the Elevator" level. It also includes the Blessing mode from NtG as a PERMANENT mechanic, eschewing the process of managing weapons. You also have a new mechanic, jumping. Like NtG, while dodge-rolling (and jumping/descending) you are fully invincible as long as your character is in the air, the only drawback being you cannot shoot. (Also, I feel like people aren't mentioning enough that you can Dodge-Roll in the air MID JUMP, increasing length and allowing you to give yourself a little more leeway to not land on top of a bunch of bullets.)

After you play the game for a little bit, you may realize that the game feels particularly barren. Not only in the weapons you get, but ALSO the items you can buy. This is because it is, at first. Like NtG, you have to use Hegemony credits to purchase new weapons and items, except the pool of items overall is MUCH smaller, and the starting pool of items and weapons is TINY. Until you start unlocking things, it's gonna feel pretty empty, just bear with it for a bit.

Enough baseline, I wanna talk what I like and what I don't.

What I like:

The gameplay loop, once you get the hang of it, is still as satisfying as NtG, except all of the downtime normally present is gone. I really like this because it's very easy to get back into a run after dying.
The Chamber design for each Gungeoneeer (Each Gungeoneer has a different route) is really enjoyable and clever. Some Chambers require you to press down on plates so that they don't shoot at you, some are balloon platforms that pop. It's fun.
The Boss design in this game is REALLY good, each boss has really fun art and most are actually really fair, with only one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boss that I can think of. Maybe two. The bosses are really good though.
The chaos on screen is really fun, especially due to the addition of Bullats CONSTANTLY spawning that make you really have to evaluate what targets you pick and choose.
The music is the same. This is good!
The game adds a transparency effect to bullets that have been on screen longer than normal for whatever reason. (Bouncy Bullets, Angry Bullets, being the Shell Launcher or Quad Laser, etc.) This is SUCH a good addition and reduces the visual noise. I would love to see this implemented in NtG.

What I don't like:

A lot of the Chambers are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HARD. To the point where the bosses are much less threatening than actually surviving the chamber itself. Stock up on health, you're gonna get hit a lot.
The blessing mechanic is very touchy, and also very dickish. You get better weapons based on your combo, and your combo fully resets if you get hit. This means you can get ♥♥♥♥ weapons very easily.
Charge weapons. ♥♥♥♥ Charge weapons. First of all, turn off the setting that auto-fires charge weapons. Second of all, every single charge weapon in the game sucks ass except for makeshift cannon. If the charge weapons were more useful, they'd be fine.
YOU CAN'T DROP ITEMS. I have had a run where I got Fat Bullets, Heavy Bullets, and Scattershot. It was a god run. I then was FORCED to pick up Eyepatch, and the run was RUINED because Scattershot + Eyepatch means you will be lucky to hit ONE bullet of your 3 bullet burst, completely negating the point of Scattershot. LET ME DROP IT.
The minigames this time around are really cumbersome and just not fun. Especially when they break. That happens a lot.

Finally, just be aware that when you buy this that it isn't NtG2. It's its own experience, and if you don't like it, you don't have to ♥♥♥♥ on it. Like I said, I really didn't like this game that much for the first 4 hours, but 10 hours in, I'm really liking the way this game differentiates itself from NtG. I really think it's worth the 10 bucks, and while it will never replace NtG, it's still a really fun spin-off.

Unless you hate Blessing mode. I can't help you there.
