Early Access Review
This is the game Dayz wants to become. Even though net code is currently an issue at times, i still very much enjoy the game.

No it's not Dark Souls and that's a good thing. As someone who played Bloodbourne and the Dark Souls trilogy in it's entirety, i thoroughly believe that Deck13 made a great addition and alternative to the "Souls-like" genre/games.

My personal highlight of this game is it's great combat. All attacks feel very meaty and impactful. You really get the feeling of beeing a badass mofo in a futuristic exo-skeleton crushing your enemies with a huge hammer. Provided you don't overestimate yourself, because this game is as dificult and merciless as the games by FromSoftware. The Scurge puts a greater emphasis on fighting "regular" enemies rather than spectacular bosses. Regardless of your gear or level you still will be absolutely destroyed by your run-of-the-mill enemies, which i personally enjoyed but some people seem to view as a balancing issue. Similar like the Souls-Games you avoid damage by either blocking or dodging atacks. Although the latter option is the more reliable. Since this game has no shields (at least to my knowledge) there are only a handful of atacks that you can block without taking noticable punishment. Unfortunately the game doesn't explain which atacks are actually blockable, so this might lead to some trial and error related frustration in the beginning. But there's a unique twist about the blocking in the Scurge. While blocking you can either duck underneath an atack or hop above an low attack. The timing to pull this off is similarly tight as the parry mechanic in the Souls-game and those "mini dodges" can be followed up by powerful counter atacks. But since this is much harder to pull of correctly than your average parry it is oh-so more satisfying. The dodge mechanic works similarly as in Bloodbourne, where you esentially make a little jump in a direction where you want to go. This works and feels just as great as in Bloodbourne and when timed perfectly you will avoid pretty much all harm.
Purely by comparing the core combat mechanics i actually prefer the Scurge over the Souls-Games (it's heresy, i know...), but the feeling of combat is obviously something very subjective and cannot be potrayed by words accurately.

The only mechanic related to combat/character customization i very dislike is the Attack Proficiency System: Basically a Elder-Scrolls-like mechanic where you do more damage with a weapon type the more you use it. I really don't get why this mechanic is in the game since every other aspect of customization invites you to experiment with your build as you go.

There are no Requirements you need to fullfill stat-wise on any Armor or Weapon. The only "stat" you level up in this game is your core power. Every piece of armor/mod/consumable consumes a certain amount of core power, so you simply design your build around the idea of managing your currently available core power. This system seems very simplistic at first glance, but allows great variety in how you want to play your character. I personaly always like to play the Souls-Games with all types of different builds, and since FromSoftware likes to put odd restrictions regarding respecs, i really enjoyed Deck13's approach.

Even though this game definitely falls behind it's competitors in terms of variety in scenery and enemy design, the game is still very pretty for a sci-fi setting mainly consisting of metal corridors.
I still think that this game is great take on the Dark-Souls-Formula and is a must-buy for every Dark Souls veteran, who is willing to question some design desicions that are so engrained in our beloved Franchise.
Im looking forward for Deck13 future work and hope that they will fix the present issues with the game.
Finally real competition to the Dark-Souls franchise!

The funniest, saddest and most terrifying game i ever played! The accompanying soundtrack is also one of the best i've ever heard.
