Highguard is one of those games that COULD be great, but falls very slightly short on every aspect.

The TTK is an awkward middle ground between the fast TTK of traditional shooters like CS, and the slow TTK of hero shooters like overwatch.

Your character is slow and clunky. The mount is obviously intended to cover for the lack of a properly developed movement system because on foot your character just feels weird to control. And not the kind of weird that you feel like you could eventually master and enjoy, like something like Apex, Deadlock, or (for a deep cut) Tribes. This plays into my next issue with the game;

The maps are WAY too big for a 3v3. I think 3v3 can work as a concept, but I think the maps need to either be shrunk down, or filled with meaningful side objectives. The mining mechanic feels very clunky and since there are too many spots to mine it isn't a controllable objective, your opponent can just go 300m away to the next mining spot, you don't drop the resource on death, and you can shop while dead.

There just aren't enough characters to play. There's only one "support" character and they can't even really support.

This game just tries to do way too much, it's a strange mix of sci-fi and fantasy setting wise. Gameplay wise it's trying to do way too many concepts at once, it's trying to be a resource/loot gathering BR style equipment game, with hero shooter king of the hill map control, and tactical shooter plant/defuse objectives.

If the vision for Highguard gets narrowed and sharpened I could genuinely see this becoming good, but in its current state it just isn't. The game is so close to being really good in a ton of different ways, but they tried to do too much at once.

There's also the easy anti cheat issue, EAC is just a genuinely terrible anticheat, is tough to remove once you uninstall the game, interferes with other programs, and reduces performance.

First time in a while that I've been hyped for a game, and that game has actually delivered.

The combat feels good, all of the guns are powerful in their own way and feel good to use. Nearly every single weapon and weapon mod is useful even late game. The melee weapons each have their own use cases, though this is primarily a shooter and not focused on melee combat. Relics in this game are much more fleshed out than in the first game, previously you had the dragon heart which was basically just and Estus flask, now you've got relics that give you a shield, relics that fully heal you after waiting for a few seconds, relics that generate mod power, and much much more.

The archetypes are unique and lend themselves to different playstyles and are all strong. Every skill feels good to use, even if some are objectively stronger than others. Plus the Handler archetype has a dog.

The bosses are all well designed (except the rubiks cube in the labyrinth) and each present a challenge that feels good to overcome, and they all drop very cool weapons. There are also alternate ways to kill some bosses, such as having the boss be positioned in a certain location when dying, or not killing the boss's bodyguard. And ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the final boss is an absolute masterpiece.

The main issues that most people are encountering are progression bugs or performance drops. There were only a few bugs that I encountered while playing through the main story, and most of them happened during the 3-day early access, the only truly annoying bug was when my character decided to t-pose one time for no discernable reason. The next issue is performance, personally I did not encounter many performance issues during my main story playthrough. I ran at a smooth 1440p 60fps the entire campaign with DLSS performance on and settings set to high or ultra.

The next thing I wanted to touch on is the amount of content in this game, there is just so much to do. Just like in From the Ashes each campaign you do will be different with different dungeons, different bosses, different loot, and different secrets. There are so many secrets to find that it's just not possible to find everything on your own, hell there are even secrets that you are literally unable to get unless you play through the game multiple times and acquire specific loot from multiple different versions of the world bosses.

And finally the story, it's mostly told through environmental lore and dialogue, not so much cutscenes, though the cutscenes are there.. I didn't pay that much attention to it, the 30 hrs I have at the time of writing this review were just playing through the campaign on Veteran.

Overall I'd give the game a 9.5/10 (the 0.5 being taken off specifically for the labyrinth sentinel boss fight) This game is amazing and I can't wait to do what GFG does with DLC in the future.

Amazing, fast paced, arena shooter
The gameplay is basically like if you mixed quake and halo together and add some sprinkles of portal on top.

Small gripes with the game:
You can't turn off crossplay on pc (you can on console though)
the settings are really annoying to fine tune (sensitivity mostly, can only click and drag the bar, can't type a value)
the auto-requeue after games is at times very nice, and at other times very annoying
infection is too hard for the survivors to win.

Valheim is not a fun game, I played for about 8 hours my first session, then a couple more sessions landed me solidly in the mid game (I think) grinding iron in the swamp biome. It was then that I realized that this game is just a perpetual chore to play, like an MMO, without the player interaction you get from playing an MMO (yes the game is multiplayer but only to an extent as you can only have 10 players per server).

Want to build something? cut down trees for 3 minutes, get a full weight capacity, go back to your base which takes another 3 minutes, store the wood you cut, and then repeat 10+ times depending on what you want to build.

Want to make tools to help you progress in the game? Either spend 5 minutes running to the black forest, swamp or whatever biome you need to farm minerals from or build a teleporter there, collect 10 ores to fill your weight capacity, then run back because you can't teleport metals because they needed to artificially inflate the grind.

Combat isn't hard, you just craft whatever the best arrows you can with the best bow and run away from the enemies while shooting them, melee weapons are basically ineffective compared to bows, they do less damage, require you to be in the most dangerous place, and are slower to move/dodge with.

My first impression of this game was great, like a 3d terraria, but then it just became a chore to do anything. I wanted to finish the game to do it justice but I couldn't push myself to grind the minerals to craft the items to kill the boss, to grind the minerals to craft the items to kill the boss, to grind the minerals to craft the items so i could kill the last boss and beat the game. Yes the building system is cool but it doesn't warrant the rest of the unfun aspects of the game.

Overall I would only recommend this game if you want your free time to be just as boring as the rest of your life.
